Youtube feed

Hi,

Until the latest update, I was able to use the RSS feed of YouTube New Subscription Videos to download the latest videos of who I have subscribed to, and watch offline. I've just updated to the latest version, and now it appears that Doggcatcher can't download them, and offers to open in YouTube app or the Internet.

How can I configure it to download the videos like before, it was very useful when on the train or bus and not having internet access?

Cheers
Paul

I agree

I think the ability to download youtube video is *extremely* useful, however I'm pretty sure it's against the YouTube terms of service.

So what happened was that a couple months ago, I noticed a bunch of youtube downloaders in the market and thought it would be a nice addition to DC. I added the capability and released it to the beta testers. A couple days before I was going to release that version to the market, I noticed that all the youtube downloaders were no longer in the market...I assume they got yanked. I disabled most of the features surrounding the youtube downloading, but it would still work if you were creative enough to put a proper youtube url for a feed.

I did a little research and discovered that downloading youtube videos is against the terms of service. So in the most recent release, I disabled the ability to download the videos and added a YouTube directory that you can use for streaming.

I really do wish I could support downloading, I personally liked it a lot...most of the time I want to watch the vids, I am on a cell network.

If the terms of service relax in the future to allow this, I'll quickly re-enable the feature.

Thats a shame, but thanks for

Thats a shame, but thanks for explaining it fully. I like the feature a lot, but I'd rather have Doggcatcher existing. It took me ages to get the correct RSS URL too as most published feeds on Youtube seemed to be Atom which didn't work.

Atom

It's funny you mention that. I became more interested in atom support when DC supported youtube downloading because most of the channel feed urls were atom. I have atom support on the todo list.

Do you find a way to get non-atom rss urls for youtube channels?

Yeah, I'm not sure if it

Yeah, I'm not sure if it works for all feeds, but if you stick ?alt=rss on the end it produces rss not atom -- so my new subscription feed is http://gdata.youtube.com/feeds/base/users/sarabian11/newsubscriptionvide... where sarabian11 is my youtube account name

this still works okayish in DC but I now have to have a network and stream the video instead - it still notes whether I have watched it or not

amazon store?

Could you maybe put a version of doggcatcher on the amazon appstore? Surely they are les worried about yt terms of service... chances are its unenforceable anyway. Google cares because they own YouTube. I love doggcatcher, but I had gotten used to yt downloads on gpodder... REALLY want this feature bad!

I agree that the feature is

I agree that the feature is very convenient, I was pretty disappointed to take it out. I pretty much stopped watching youtube feeds since its removal.

It really more about what's correct rather than what's enforceable. I don't think I'm going to be able to include a feature in the app that violates the terms of the provider of the content.

Thanks for posting.

Pausing/resuming

Nowadays playing a YouTube stream on a phone is no problem, so downloading them often isn't important.

For me DoggCatcher's killer feature is reliable pause/resume which works even a week later or after a reboot. Since YouTube videos are played on an external application, I lose this ability. I often watch long conference videos on the bus and need to resume where I stopped the day before.

Any idea if this would be feasible in DoggCatcher? Maybe with an internal YouTube stream player?

I can give that a shot. I'm

I can give that a shot. I'm not sure the internal player will seek to the proper position when streaming youtube but it may. I created an issue for this - http://mantis.snoggdoggler.com/view.php?id=1269

Thanks for the feedback.

You can use YouCast

youcast.codeplex.com
it just gives you a link, and allows to download youtube videos through any pod-catcher you want (like DoggCatcher)
