A few ideas/reqests

Eric, I am just coming over to android (sprint evo) after several years with an Iphone. Listening to podcasts/as a media player is what I use the phone for the most.

I was really surprised by how much better of a user experience is on the iphone as far as podcast/media playing goes, but I am hopeful that it will progress. I selected Doggcatcher due to your obvious attempts to make a great product.

I have found workarounds for a few of my issues, but I wanted to leave the two main ones.

1. Why does the phone lock when doggcatcher is playing a podcast? If I need to stop it after the screen blanks I have to press power, swipe down, enter password or pattern, and then press pause. I also am unable to see time elapsed or fast forward or backward once the screen goes. I know that I can lengthen this time, but there is no option that differentiates between being on battery or not so this is really not an option. Is there anything that can be done? Not to harp on the iphone, but it may be the model for this type of thing, but the screen stays on when listening.

2.The ability to "speed up" a podcast. The Iphone has a button for this and it works very well. From reading I see that this is an android limitation for the most part and there may be nothing you can do. I am using podshifter until then.

btw, I know that if I wanted an iphone I should have stayed with it. The things is I do not and am willing to give up some features to go to android....

thanks for your time...

1. I believe this is fairly easily implemented feature "keep the phone awake" for the people who want to kill their battery :)

2. This has been discussed previously and as far as I remember, it was concluded that at this point it's not possible with the way android handles media. Maybe something changed with Froyo.

Screen blank / play speed

Karolis is right on with both of those issues

1 - I have an issue to let you keep the screen on when on the play mode screen - http://mantis.snoggdoggler.com/view.php?id=495. I plan on doing this pretty soon.

2 - At the moment this is not possible (without doing a very large amount of work). I'm hoping that it is added to the android framework shortly.

Thanks for the feedback.

Keep awake

One other thing is that you do have an option in Android to keep the screen awake when the phone is plugged in. It is in Settings > Applications > Development > Stay awake

That won't help when you're not plugged in, but I don't think you normally want that big EVO screen on when you're burning battery.

Hey ChicagoPete, great idea,

Hey ChicagoPete, great idea, I did not know that existed. That is a good workaround until Eric can add it to DC specifically with the only drawback being a slower battery charge all around and reduction in security...

thanks for pointing that one out.

Even better

It's really up to you. If you do turn on that option, you can still manually turn off the screen with the power button. So, when you need to have the screen on it'll stay on, and when you need the security, you can turn it off.

feature requests

I'm looking to replace Google Listen which is horribly buggy, and am considering purchasing your app.

1) I second the playback speed request.
2) I would like to know if you can select auto-download and auto-delete options on a per-subscribed podcast basis. Certain podcasts (e.g. This American Life) are only available for a week and I'd like to grab them each week and save them - other podcasts are disposable or redownloadable for long periods.
3) Another desirable feature is non-removal from queue after listening (I sometimes fall asleep and miss podcasts, and in Listen they are removed and I have to figure out which ones I missed.
4) related to 3 would be a timer to stop playback after a settable interval - XiiaLive has a fantastic implementation of this with volume fade.

Apologies if these features are already there. I'm trying to eval things quickly

requests

1 - Here's a snip from the faq

Can DoggCatcher speed up audio playback?

Not at the moment. There have been numerous requests for this and I would love to add it, however the Android media player does not currently support altering playback speed. Once this becomes possible, I will add the feature to DoggCatcher. Here's a related discussion on the topic.

2 - Yep, you can set 'retain expired' to true to hang on to the old tal audio if you want.

3 - There are some different auto-delete policies besides delete when done that might do what you need

4 - Not yet, but it's on the todo list.

For the people asking about

For the people asking about the ALways On thing, I have this Quasi set up through another application called "Setting Profiles". I only listen to podcasts through my Bluetooth headphones, my car via bluetooth, or using the N1 desktop dock (via bluetooth).

With Setting Profiles I can tell it when I am connected to specific devices (Desktop and Car in my case), then don't turn off the screen.

Setting profiles also supports tons of other cool things, like location aware profiles, etc. I have it set up to open my shopping list app when I am at the store.
