Downloads failing

Hi! I'm a big fan of doggcatcher, it's one of my favorite applications on Android. Recently however I've been experiencing errors downloading my podcasts. They always fail and give up after 5 attempts. Does anybody know what I can do to fix it? Thanks in advance!

eric any idea about this? I

eric any idea about this? I haven't been able to download any podcast for about 4-5 days now. I've considered uninstalling and reinstalling the app, but I'm a bit reluctant to, assuming I will lose all of my RSS data and downloads. Thanks for any thoughts, am I the only one with this problem?

Hold off on the uninstall

No podcasts for 4-5 days? This is serious :-)

If you uninstall, you will lose all your RSS Data, downloads will remain on the SD card but they will no longer be known to DoggCatcher.

Is there an error message in the notifications? If you open the keyboard, you can see more of the error message.

Are you able to use the cell phone for data in any other way, like the browser or email? I have had to reboot my phone a couple time in the past month or two because the data services stop working. I recently found that toggling the airplane mode usually resolves this without a reboot though.

It may be possible that the SD card is full, but if this is the case, the error in the notification will indicate so.

Yeah email and web is working

Yeah email and web is working fine. The message says "Download Failed 5 times, giving up". There is no more information. I tried rebooting and toggling airplane mode but no luck. Running out of podcasts to keep me happy too :(

Appreciate any further info but I may be forced to just reinstall? Thanks!

Error message before the give-up

What should be happening is that you should be able to see the error message in the notifications as each failure occurs, but after it has given up, you'll no longer see an error message. Can you check the notifications while the errors are occurring but before the app give-up. I think we might have some good clues in those errors messages.

I will improve this so when it gives up, it will show the last error that occurred.

the error message for the

the error message for the individual fails is:

E.G.:

"Download failed: /sdcard/Doggcatcher/EpidideEnclosures/1/TWI..."

Does that help?

There must be some conflict

There must be some conflict going on. I tried my old SD card (2gb) and the downloads worked fine. Then I swapped back to my 8gb one and transferred all files to my computer to temporarily put on the 2gb. Now it's not working on either... Confused!!!

Took out the 2gb SD card,

Took out the 2gb SD card, refitted it, rebooted. Now it works. Don't know for how long or what is causing the problem.

It doesn't seem to like being

It doesn't seem to like being "mounted" when connected to a computer using USB. Don't think that was causing my problem but I received a message along the lines of "SD card is being used by two sources and won't work properly" and the downloads seem to fail. Sorry for rambling.

That could be it

I'm almost positive that DoggCatcher will not function when the SD card is mounted as USB. When DC starts, it verifies that the SD card is not mounted and will display a warning message if it is mounted. That's sounds like what you are describing.

When the SD card is mounted as USB, it becomes invisible to applications such as DC. So we won't be able to read/write any audio files, you'll also see the podcast thumbnails disappear too.

I'll need to add some detection of the USB mount and have DC stop it processes and give a warning to the user.

Thanks for sharing the experience so we can get it handled more gracefully.

It's helpful to know that

It's helpful to know that mounting causes a problem, but unfortunately that isn't my only issue. I think it would be a good idea to state clearly when USB is mounted that the application will not function and then perhaps have it close down so there is no confusion.

My 2GB SD card is downloading and functioning fine, but I've tried my 8GB again (unmounted), and the downloads still fail. I suppose the diagnosis must be that my SD card is broken. It's a Sandisk one so I'm puzzled because I thought they were reputable and have only had the card a matter of weeks. Do you know if SD card malfunction is common? Also do you know the maximum size of SD card that G1 can handle? I may upgrade to an even bigger one than 8GB, and my 2GB will run out fast!

Thanks for all of your help eric, I hope to contribute more to the community when everything is sorted!

Now it seems fixed. I

Now it seems fixed. I connected to my computer and this time it said the drive had an error and asked if I wanted to scan and fix it. Now it downloads! WEIRD! Maybe this will happen to someone else in future so your time wasn't entirely wasted reading my drivel! Fingers crossed no more problems!

I have 52 downloads lined up! :)

8gb card

I really don't mind. It's unfortunate that you're having these problems. Someone else was having the same problem with an 8GB sd card in the market comments.

It seems that there are some conditions that can cause an SD card to get corrupted. I'm not sure if there's anything we can do as an android developer to prevent that from happening. But we should be able to help by alerting the users when the USB is mounted and DC is already running. That would have made it a bit easier to get to the final conclusion you reached. Doing this is on the future feature list.

Had the download errors

Had the download errors again, ran an error check on the card which fixed it again for me. This time I checked the log file and one of the lines said "The size of the \power_manager\log.txt entry is not valid."

I think there may be a conflict with the Power Manager application so I uninstalled it for now. I'll see how it goes.

I'll do the opposite

I'll come from the other angle and start my power manager to see if I can cause the problem. If I can reproduce it, we can get in touch with the power manager developer and let them know what's going on.

So when you repaired the card, were you plugging the phone to the pc via USB or did you put the SD card in a card reader?

I was plugging in using USB,

I was plugging in using USB, had to do it a few times before I could get the error check program to come up. Then I ask it to automatically fix the error and I wrote down the line from the message which referred to Power Manager. I will let you know if the problem occurs again. Thanks!
