Auto downloads doesn't limit the number downloaded

I listen to a number of podcasts from when they started, perhaps years ago. This means there are a large number of unlistened episodes, of which I want DoggCatcher to download automatically so there are 4 unlistened after each refresh.

In basic settings for a podcast there's a setting "Auto downloads". I have that set to 4 but find that DoggCatcher may only download 4 on one refresh, but could download another 4 on every refresh regardless of the number waiting to be listened to. It keeps downloading episodes well beyond 4 - could be 50-200!

Am I misunderstanding what the setting is supposed to do?
Is there a way to achieve what I'm expecting, which seems a very standard requirement.

Using version 1.2.4154

My only difference was the global Download Order which I had as oldest-first. Now it's default.

I may have found the issue: One one podcast series it seemed to be downloading the same file for every episode. So it'd download 4 each time, but still only see one file downloaded. I'll have to check whether that podcast series is able to send distinct episodes.

Many of my other podcast series are certainly working as expected, so I'll see whether all instances of seeming over-downloading have similar bad/duplicate files.
