Loss of listeners through Doggcatcher

I produce a podcast called The Final Edition Radio Hour, and we seem to have suddenly lost all the listeners who'd been downloading through Doggcatcher. We upload through Acast, on which Doggcatcher had been a particularly strong source of listeners. But at the end of September, the numbers from Doggcatcher suddenly dropped to zero or just one per day. Do you have any idea what happened there?

POSSIBLY RELEVANT: This was also around when we stopped being associated with National Lampoon, whose trademark was part of our brand from 2015 to 2019.

The Final Edition Radio Hour

There are two feed subscriptions of the Final edition podcast, one no longer published and uses a the Podbean URL ( https://thefinaledition.podbean.com/feed.xml )
& the other uses Acast (https://rss.acast.com/thefinaledition)

The Acast version has an issue with duplicate file names, the app has workaround solutions to resolve this problem.

It's possible the users of the app are not using the diagnostics feature to fix the problem

Also there are several errors listed with the acast & Podbean url's re Feed Validation Service - https://validator.w3.org/feed/

Acast - https://validator.w3.org/feed/check.cgi?url=https%3A%2F%2Frss.acast.com%...

Podbean - https://validator.w3.org/feed/check.cgi?url=https%3A%2F%2Fthefinaleditio...

New subscribers of the feed have to wait a bit for the feed URL's to be listed using the app's search feature, because when you initially press subscribe the feed displays an error and once the feed is refreshed, the error goes away.

I will also forward this issue to the app's developer

Reply

Thank you. I understood ... some of that. I have no direct access to Podbean, so there's not much I can do there. But is there anything I can do differently with Acast?

I have no knowledge of how

I have no knowledge of how feed URL's are created, if Acast creates the URL for your feed, you could contact them and reference the Acast Feed Validation Service URL https://validator.w3.org/feed/check.cgi?url=https%3A%2F%2Frss.acast.com%... that lists all the errors and see if they can fix the problems

Upload to Doggcatcher directly?

I'm forwarding your error list to them - but is there a way for me to upload directly to Doggcatcher, if this can't get worked out?

Unfortunately no, the app

Unfortunately no, the app uses  RSS URL’s provided by publishers & relies on their servers for metadata (Episode titles/descriptions, show notes & feed thumbnail ) and media content (Audio & Video files)

Other podcast managers may cache media from podcasts on their own servers and currently that's not possible with the DoggCatcher app.

Now uploading through Libsyn

I have begun uploading through our account on Libsyn. Is it possible for you to access the feed through there?

The Final Edition - Libsyn URL

The URL https://www.spreaker.com/show/3561297/episodes/feed is listed first in the app's database using the search term (The Final Edition) though it's not updated to the current episode published 5 days ago.

Response from Acast

This is the latest response from Acast:

The errors listed in the previously linked feed validator (which is currently the only explanation given by Doggcatcher regarding your issues at the end of September) are errors ONLY on episodes that published in 2015~2017. These are the episodes that have 6 digit GUIDs that our tech team has identified as "unique but simple" and these are episodes that were not published through Acast.

Anything you've published with Acast has GUIDs of 36 characters that should be sufficiently unique, because none of these episodes are flagged in the validator given by Doggcatcher. Therefore, it A) doesn't really make any sense that episodes that were already published on your feed pre-October would suddenly be the reason you are having issues with Doggcatcher unless something changed with Doggcatcher itself. And B) makes me think that updating the GUIDs (which I don't think we can technically make longer than the current 36 characters) for episodes published in September (which are not being flagged as issues by the validator given by Doggcatcher) would not be the solution to the outstanding issue with Doggcatcher. As far as we can see on our end, we're not noticing any errors with the Acast RSS that would target one app specifically (since there seem to be no issues on other podcatchers using the same Acast RSS).

I only said the errors was a

I only said the errors was a possible reason for the sudden drop of all the listeners from the app.
The Acast (https://rss.acast.com/thefinaledition) URL is no longer listed in the app's database though it was listed when you first posted about this issue.

Currently only the Podbean URL https://thefinaledition.podbean.com/feed.xml

and the Libsyn URL https://www.spreaker.com/show/3561297/episodes/feed
is listed in the database

The DC developer no longer handles the app's searchable database

See "Subject: Adding Podcast/Feeds to DoggCatcher Database" http://www.doggcatcher.com/node/6883

I have forwarded this issue to the developer, he should respond in a few days or so.

I'm coming in a little late

I'm coming in a little late here but from what I can tell the spreaker feed seems to be working fine in DC. I subscribed to it from the search database and there are episodes going back over a year. I downloaded a few and they are working fine.

Is this still a problem?
