Daily podcast sync not working (Galaxy S8 - Pie)

Hello. I recently started using DoggCatcher. I like it so far, however it is very inconsistent in syncing podcasts. I've got it set to sync on mobile or Wifi, but only download new episodes on Wifi. The downloads part works great once new episodes are detected. I've got it set to sync daily at 2:00 AM. Yesterday morning the sync worked just fine. This morning the sync didn't happen even though I verified through another app that a new episode had been published. Also manual syncs work just fine. Any ideas?

What do you mean "Daily

What do you mean "Daily podcast sync"? Are you you using the app's cloud sync experimental feature?

Perhaps "sync" was the wrong

Perhaps "sync" was the wrong word. I set my feed update interval for a daily update every day at 2:00 AM. It only updates when I do it manually.

Thanks for the tips. However,

Thanks for the tips. However, none of those seem to be working. I've got only 10 episodes downloaded currently out of a maximum allowed of 30. Also episodes are set to delete once they're done. I also checked the log files and saw no activity at 2:00 AM when the app should be checking for feed updates.

Automatic downloads themselves work fine once the app detects there are new episodes to download. The issue seems to be that it's not automatically checking for feed updates at the scheduled time.

New episodes will not be

New episodes will not be downloaded if you already 30 episodes already downloaded and the "Auto-Download" setting is set to 30, but if you only have 10 episodes downloaded, new episodes will be downloaded when they're published by the publisher of the feed/podcast

The app is designed to download the latest published episode from each feed/podcast subscription....based on when episodes are published (Hourly, daily, weekly, monthly and so on) additional older published episodes has to be manually downloaded.

If no new episodes are available for download at 2:00 AM then nothing will be downloaded.

Thanks again for replying.

Thanks again for replying. For this particular podcast, I know two new episodes were published last Thursday and Friday. They just haven't been automatically updated yet in my app. The last update was last Wednesday in the app.

I'm waiting for it to automatically trigger. If I manually have the app check for new episodes, it will download them. It just won't do it on a schedule even though my setting indicate it should be able to.

Check the app's settings (DC

Check the app's settings (DC Navigation Menu>Settings)
Feed Updates:
Start on Boot is enabled
update feeds on start is disabled
Feed update interval is set to 12 hrs or 1 day
Feeds update time is set to 2AM
Global Feed Options:
Auto downloads is set to 30
Number of episodes/articles is set to 30
Auto delete policy is set to Done episodes
Download order is set to default

Verify the limit feed updates & downloads...if any of the settings are enabled example updates/downloads on Wifi or Power ...... the app won't update or download unless Wifi network is connected to your device and/or power source.

All those settings you

All those settings you mentioned are exactly what I have. Under limit feed updates & downloads, I only have Downloads - on WiFi checked. The other boxes are not. However since the podcast sync should take place overnight when I'm on my home WiFi, this shouldn't be an issue. Also I didn't see anything in the logs to indicate that the app planned to download something but failed due to not being connected to WiFi.

However I did look in the logs just now and this morning at 2:00 AM I saw a couple of back-to-back messages.

Mon, 6 May 2019 02:02:51 -0500 INFO (30434)
AndroidUtil::Connected to network: false
Mon, 6 May 2019 02:02:51 -0500 INFO (30434)
ChannelUpdateThread::No network connection, cancelling feed update

These same log entries do not show up on the morning of May 5 even though my settings haven't changed between those dates. It looks like a feed update was attempted this morning but failed and there was no feed attempt yesterday morning.

That means the app isn't

That means the app isn't getting a WIFI connection overnight for some reason.

From the device settings...disable & re-enable the WiFi network connection>

If that doesn't work, reboot your router and your device

Also verify if "Screen on when downloading" is enabled (DC Navigation Menu>Settings>User Interface)

"Screen on when downloading"

"Screen on when downloading" is already enabled. WiFi seems to be working as other apps aren't having an issue. I'll reboot the router and phone and check it tomorrow morning. Thanks!

I checked the logs this

I checked the logs this morning and there was no attempt made to update the feed at 2:00 AM. I've changed the feed update interval to every 6 hours to see if that makes a difference.

OK. I checked the log files

OK. I checked the log files again. Both at 8:00 AM and 2:00 PM, the app tried to do a feed update, but again I see the following log entries.
Tue, 7 May 2019 14:00:01 -0500 INFO (4075) AndroidUtil::Connected to network: false
Tue, 7 May 2019 14:00:01 -0500 WARNING (4075) AndroidUtil::Connected to network: false

My phone is on a different Wifi this time (at work), but I also have "Updates - on WiFi" unchecked, and I'm able to maintain a very good cell connection, so even if WiFi is unavailable, I would assume the app would still be able to use a cell connection to do the update.

Any ideas to get scheduled feed updates working? This looks to be the issue (not detecting a network connection). I've already rebooted the phone and my home router. And the network and app work just fine for manual feed updates.

Sorry, copy/paste failed me.

Sorry, copy/paste failed me. The second log entry should be:

The URL: http://feeds

The URL: http://feeds.soundcloud.com/users/soundcloud:users:78921 is broken or wrong - lists the title as "Frostflow" and no media content is avaliable for download

I found a "Bob and Brian Podcasts" in the database URL http://feeds.soundcloud.com/users/soundcloud:users:78921656/sounds.rss

Episodes are published daily at around 3:00 PM eastern - the latest episode "More Backstab Stories!" downloaded without an issue .....I'll check the app later today to see if the next available published episode is downloaded

That sounds good. I doubt it's the feed itself because it seems to update just fine when I do it manually. But anything we can do to troubleshoot is worth looking at. Thanks!

No clue why, but most of my feed subscriptions that published new episodes this afternoon updated and downloaded new episodes except the "Bob and Brian Podcasts" feed.

I tried it with another podcast app and a new episode did download. What happens if you try a manual feed update?

Two episodes with the same

Two episodes with the same title downloaded "The History of No Hitters with Tim Murray and Fireman Jim" when I manually updated

I subscribed to the feed on 2 other podcast managers to see if the issue can be reproduced, I'm also going to see if the same thing happens when using mobile data

DC downloaded the latest

DC downloaded the latest published episode "Murder, Suicide, Robbery,Gambling are all part of this Shocking Stabbed in the Back Story" using mobile data, the other podcast managers failed to download the episode when limited to WiFi, but I'm having problems with my router .....I contacted Eric (DC Dev) and based the log entry "Tue, 7 May 2019 14:00:01 -0500 WARNING (4075) ChannelUpdateThread::No network connection, cancelling feed update" Android itself is not getting a WiFi connection

Try rebooting your device

I rebooted the device a couple days ago per your recommendation and still have the same issue. I can try it again.

If I manually pull the feed, it seems to detect the Wifi connection because it works like a charm. The error only comes up for scheduled feed updates. I also have the setting "Updates - on WiFi" unchecked so even if I didn't have a WiFi connection, it should use my mobile connection to update the feed.

I resolved the problem with my WiFi router, had to get a WiFi extender and the new episode from the feed updated & downloaded without an issue using the DC app and the other 2 podcast managers.

Hmmm...OK. That still doesn't quite explain why the DC app can detect a WiFi signal when I initiate a manual feed update vs. not detecting one when attempting an automatic feed update. I'll keep playing with it to see what I can find. Thanks for your help!

Something within Android on

Something within Android on your device is blocking WiFi from the app (DC) based on the log entries you have provided....I don't know if it's a permissions or some other issue......since I don't have access to your phone or a detailed log right after a scheduled feed update & download.

If you don't subscribe to a lot of of feeds, you could allow updates & downloads using mobile data from your service provider...if that is a problem and the app isn't working out for you...I can request refund from the developer, if the purchase is over a certain time period...then it isn't possible through Google's Play Store.

Email support (AT) doggcatcher (Dot) com with your details (email address & order number)

The app is great otherwise so I'm not looking for a refund. If this is not a common issue, I'll continue to look into why my phone isn't behaving. Thanks again!

Yes Android is blocking

Yes Android is blocking WiFi from the app on the initial scheduled feed update & download & not when you manually update your feed subscriptions....no this not a common issue
