Keep-alive Audio paused

I used to be able to have doggcatcher open listening to a podcast while I was playing pokemon go (PG). The audio would stop when I went into pokemon go but I could swipe down touch the specific podcast in the list and it would start again, and I could go back into PG and listen/play at the same time.

Now when I go into PG it stops the audio (like it did before) but when I swipe down instead of seeing the podcast I see "Keep-alive Audio paused" if I touch that it puts me back into Doggcatcher.

I can use other audio players (outside of Doggcatcher) and I can play PG and listen to audio. Thoughts? Like I said this used to work.

Pokemon GO recently received

Pokemon GO recently received an update to "fix" the audio issues it was having with other audio players.

It's supposed to no longer pause music, but instead what it's doing it suspending it somehow, when you tab back out of pokemon GO, the music will start again.

It's not directly related to doggcatcher, I've had it happen on Spotify as well.

Than ks for the reply, its weird because my other audio players still work, so I wonder what the difference is between them and DC?

This isn't true, still works

This isn't true, still works fine with Amazon music and Google music so there must be a way for this to continue working.

I agree

I agree with you, which is why I started the original thread. Does anybody have any thoughts?

The problem is the Pokemon go

The problem is the Pokemon go app isn't releasing audio focus when they're done, so other apps like DC can resume playing audio.

Hello, thanks for the response.
What do you mean won't release audio focus when done? I used to be able to play Pokemon Go when also listening to DC podcasts. Like was mentioned above other media players do still work in Pokemon Go (google play music for example) so I can play PG and listen to music/audio file. So I don't understand while people think it is a PG problem when other players work. I would prefer to use DC (I really like the variable speed option) but I want to listen to something while I play PG out on a walk. It used to work just fine so I am wondering what changed.

For some reason the Pokemon

For some reason the Pokemon go app requests audio focus from DC when you start the app and DC is running the background, but won't release it when it's done.

They way Android handles notifications... the app's (DC )playback notification is programmed to remain when you pause or another app requests audio focus, when this happens...the app runs at a lower priority when paused. If the notification vanishes or playback controls no longer present on the notification, then Android is killing the app or causing the app's notification to work incorrectly because of memory pressure (to many apps running).

Even if the app isn't killed by Android, the Pokemon go app is still holding audio focus from DC , so the app will not resume playback...unless you manually press play on the DC's playback notification, widget or media control bar within the app.

pocket casts works

So I downloaded pocket casts and it works with Pokemon go. It works exactly how Doggcatcher used to work. I start a podcast in Pocket casts, I listen, I then then open PG, it pauses the audio, I then pull down the notification shade, press the play button on the Pocket casts notification it starts playing again and I go back to PG.

In DC I do not see a podcast notification play button on the notification shade to press. (which I used to). I guess I still don't understand why we think this is a PG problem, when it works likes this for multiple other apps.

Anyway, unfortunately if this functionality does not come back I am going to have to change podcast applications. I have been a paid user of DG for about 4 years.

Thanks,

Greg

found a fix

It seems like if I pause the audio on Doggcatcher, then open PoGo, the notification control option is available rather than the keep-alive message. This worked for me today, but I've been dealing with the same issue you've got, hope it might work for you!

I think the actual issue is being overlooked

Just logging in to comment that blaming the other apps for their indiscretions isn't really helping. Other apps (Fallout Shelter, in my case) may be doing the incorrect thing, but that doesn't mean DG should yield the focus.

Even if it's considered correct. I've just run Amazon Music and didn't even get the typical pause as FoS tried to take focus. So it's not impossible.

Previously I was able to work around the problem by just tapping play from the notification widget but as already mentioned, I no longer get that but the "Keep alive" notification instead. So I can't restart my audio without switching to DG. Of course, once I switch back to the app it steals focus again.

I'd be happy enough if I could get rid of the "Keep alive" notification but I'd prefer if DG didn't yield the focus.

Either way I find it unhelpful to simply blame the other app and throw your hands in the air. It's clearly a solvable problem as I and others have said. If it's too difficult or there isn't resourcing then just say that. (but, can I get my play button back in the widget, at least?)

Just give me the play button!

A notification that tells me the audio is paused is the most useless message you could provide. When the audio stops but DC is in my notification tray the ONE thing I know is that the audio is paused. The ONE thing I want is to hit the play button. When other applications get paused (my audio book player, Overdrive, for example) the notification is their normal "skip back / play / skip forward" widget.

Can we please just get that? Blame Pokemon Go or Fallout Shelter or whatever you want, but can we get a play button?

As a programmer myself I find this really frustrating because regardless of why something interferes with an application I'm writing I still have to address it.

Controls in notification bar please!

ALL of my other media apps except for DC have player controls in the notification shade so that when an app like Pokemon Go steals focus I can easily restart the audio. Doggcatcher normally has a notification bar player, but it disappears when I am in Pokemon Go and displays the "keep alive" notification that opens the full app on my screen instead. Please fix this. I have been using Doggcatcher for over a decade and would hate to switch after many years of problem free user experience. Galaxy S8
