Variable Speed Hidden in latest version -- bad UI change!

The newest version (released 10/2/2015) has hidden the variable speed change option behind an options toggle.

This adds an additional step to change the speed ---->> BAD change for usability!

I am always changing the speed of playback, depending on the particular podcast and how closely I need to listen. Sometimes I'll even change within a given episode depending on the flow or topic of conversation.

Especially for apps like Doggcatcher that are used often while driving -- adding additional steps is a BAD idea!

Please remove this unnecessary additional step and revert to having the speed adjustment always available!

To add to this , regarding the new seek bar --
After some time using the re-designed interface, I also find that the new location of the seek bar is such that it is very easy to accidentally skip to the end of the episode when reaching for options toggle on the bottom right. Frustrating.

I will be changing that

I will be changing that button so that there's an undo, which should address that problem.

Thanks for the feedback.

I agree that this is really bad, I have inadvertantly skipped to other parts 3 times already today and takes way too long to find my way back to the right spot. Also I do not like having to dive down into a menu to change the speed either. Much better to just have the toggle through feature with a smaller %done bar.

Just inadvertantly hit the bar again resulting in a skip to a completely different point, took me 3 minutes to find my place again. I almost never want to skip to another part of a podcast by touching the progress bar, can you just make it so that can be disabled entirely if you are going to have the progress bar be so large. Realistically I'd much rather have the speed adjustment and display back where it was and a much smaller progress bar.

Yep, there's a difference

Yep, there's a difference here that takes some adjustment.

The total number of presses is just about the same as it was before. It was less if you wanted to increase the speed, but more if you wanted to decrease the speed because you had to cycle all the way around to 1.0x. So it was one or five. Now it's always three.

This change does make the app easier in other ways, like finding the auto-play, and sleep timer, so it seemed like a fair tradeoff.

the total number of presses

the total number of presses to go from 1.2 to 1.5x might be the same but now I have to press the screen in 3 different locations and if I touch wrong I have to start over. Also before I could tell what speed I was at with 0 presses but now I have to click to check and then click again to cancel if I don't want to change.

Pop-up menus are HORRIBLE UI while driving

In order to change speeds, you have to tap on a menu button, wait for the menu to pop up, read the menu, find the right setting, and then select it.
This involves positioning your finger over a small target 3 different times.

Before, you just had to locate the toggle button, and tap it the right number of times.
Number of targets: 1

Also, I agree with the other posters in this thread, the progress bar is too easy to hit on accident.
At least let there be an option to use toggles instead of menus.

I think what I might do is

I think what I might do is add a button on the playing screen (when you press on the feed thumb on the bottom left) that behaves the same as the button I removed. That playing screen has a much better layout for driving...there just isn't enough room on the main screen media button area for another button. The media buttons were too hard to hit before.

Thanks for the feedback.

I must second this request.

I've been using doggcatcher for years and love it without many complaints. This one actuall got me off my butt to register here :)

The old cycle through adjustment for the playback speed was vastly superior for the reasons already mentioned... Please revert?

I also liked the older seek bar better, but I can live with this one. It's alright.

Thanks for your work.

Nice app!

For the larger seekbar/older seekbar, was much nicer. Maybe a UI option to make it larger in the menus, I miss the old bar.
Or possibly a way to enter a time, if you hold your finger down on the seek bar to, pop up a time menu to specific a time as an alternative solution, something for accuracy on a podcast.

This is a fantastic app and been a great program for years.

Thanks.

The app currently updates the current position time on the left while you are dragging the position slider so you can get an indicating of what spot you'll be at when you release the slider.

Just to toss in my two cents...

This thread feels like it's filled with people hating on the change to the variable speed button, so I just wanted to drop a note defending the change. I used to be constantly accidentally changing the playback speed because I was accidentally hitting the speed indicator, and the short press behavior was to cycle through the speeds. In addition, it was a bad UI for driving (for me) because whenever it was a problem while I was driving, I wasn't the person manipulating the app--my WIFE was, and since she doesn't use audio apps on her phone (she still uses our old iPods), I had to walk her through how to set the speed back to 1.0.

In addition, the UI change made it much easier for me to toggle the autoplay option. Now, it's two presses, before it was at least three (going into a different mode, toggling the setting, the exiting the mode).

Personally, I think the solution to needing to change playback speed for different podcasts isn't making the speed switch a single press, it's adding the feature someone requested a while back to have a variable speed preference setting for each feed. That way, DC can automatically change playback speed based on what you're listening to.

it is a lot easier to reset

it is a lot easier to reset the playback speed than it is to find your place in the podcast when it skips on its own.

any word on progress bar update or reversion

this progress bar thing is awful, when I try to scroll I keep skipping to a totally different place in the podcast and then have to spend several minutes trying to find my place. This never happened before. I also would still prefer the old style for the variable speed adjustment.

waited for an update had to give up

So I have been a loyal user since for years, and I have convinced several friends to buy the app, but these changes are unacceptable. I am tired of inadvertantly skipping to a random spot in the podcast. I installled pocket casts today and am in the process of transferring all my podcasts over. I also just rated doggcatcher 1 star. Really frustrating how you broke the app, but since I used it for years I won't ask for a refund, but I do wish I could revert back to the old ui.

Changing the variable speed

Changing the variable speed just became a bit easier on the playing screen (which you get to by pressing on the feed thumb at the bottom left). There's now a button at the top with a 1.1x to directly pop open the menu. That'll be in the release after next, probably in a week or so - http://mantis.doggcatcher.com/view.php?id=2147

For the seekbar problem, there is a configuration in settings / audio player / seekbar that will let you disable the seekbar altogether. I actually totally forgot that was there, I think I added it 4 or 5 years ago.

Sounds like you already made the swtich but thanks for supporting the app and contributing to conversations to make it better.
