Long press menu on episodes

This went away with the last update. If possible it would be great to have it back. My fingers are clumsy and my eyes are old. The menu dots at the side are sometimes hard to hit right.

Long pressing to access the

Long pressing to access the episode menu dialog box is going away in order to use the long pressing function to enable multi-selection of episodes. press on the 3 dots hamburger menu icon on each episode to get the same menu that you used to be able to get to by long pressing. The latest beta release of DC - version 1.2.5179 on most of the screens (Currently only the audio/video/news tabs) that list episodes, you can activate multi-select either by pressing on the feed thumb (if the episode row has one) or by long pressing on the episode & then be able to do the same action on multiple episodes at once (Episode Menu Dialog Box) See DoggCatcher Beta post Version 1.2.5179 & request issue - 0001579: Allow bulk operations on episodes on the audio/video/news tabs - http://mantis.doggcatcher.com/view.php?id=1579 listed under DoggCatcher - 1.2.next (Scheduled For Release 2015-05-29) http://mantis.doggcatcher.com/roadmap_page.php

Would it be possible to

Would it be possible to revert my install to before Long Press was disabled? This app was near perfect before, but the new long press feature in the next update is something that I will never use. Having the option to switch between this and the old long press function would be great.

Going backwards with versions

Going backwards with versions of DC is not recommended, because sometimes going backwards doesn't work.

not sure on this feature

Long press for menu is a lot easier for a lot of reasons, and if multiple episode selection is a thing that you want to put through, could using the side dots be an option for that instead? This feels like a real functionality miss to me.

Completely agree. Trying to

Completely agree. Trying to figure out a way to word how much I dislike this new approach without getting banned. I can think of no reason why I'd want to multi-select episodes. Big step backwards if you ask me.

I can see both sides of this

I can see both sides of this discussion. I really would like to have the ability to multi-select episodes (and feeds) to perform batch actions on them all at once, but being able to perform batch operations doesn't really make sense if you can't also easily perform actions on single episodes. That's most likely why the dots menu button is going to be made larger. I don't have the beta version of the app, so I don't know exactly how the multi-select works, but we'll probably be able to select just one episode and perform an action on that, so the dots menu might not even be necessary.

an alternative?

the removal of this feature is unbelievably irritating (seriously, wtf?), but i do understand the thought process behind it. but maybe we could have a compromise?
longpress the main podcast area (where the title/length/size is) for the menu, but long press on the podcast thumbnail for multi-select?

The ONLY thing that fixed this for me...

I have been cussing at the removal of "force download" for a week. Yesterday on the road, i tried for hours to get just ONE podcast to download over the cell network. Never happened! The "three dot" "hamburger menu" only forces update of the feed description. But I CAN recommend what ended up working for me: I UNINSTALLED DOGGCATCHER AND BOUGHT POCKET CASTS. WORKS GREAT !

Long Press... sigh

Folks - I registered here today for the sole purpose of decrying this horrible UI decision you have made. I add my annoyance to that of the others here. You have removed a VERY handy and intuitive way to access functionality. The dots hamburger menu is borderline useless. I find myself tapping MANY times to try and get it to work - most times it does not and I inadvertently start downloading an episode - which is NOT my intention.

No offense guys - bad decision here. BAD decision.

long press

I want to add my missing the long press as well. I used it daily. I love and have used Doggcatcher since my first Droid Incredible days. I won't stop using the app but I do miss it. Thanks

Add my name to the list ...

Please add mine to the voices of those critical of the removal of the long-press feature. The three-dot menu access is inferior, hard to hit when my phone is in a case (which is always), and I often find myself accidentally playing an episode or starting a download instead of reaching the menu. I downloaded the latest update, and there certainly is no notable improvement to the size of the dots.

I have used DoggCatcher every day since Google Listen died, and I certainly have gotten my $5 worth from this app — but a move like this has prompted me to start investigating other options. I wish you would reconsider the change to what is otherwise a five-star piece of software.

The 3 dot menu icon may not

The 3 dot menu icon may not appear bigger, but the target area to press is larger.

This past Friday's update does not include the larger target area.

That will be released this coming Friday.

No, Non, Nein, Iie

I downloaded the update, and it fails to meet my needs. I would like to thank you for the years of a great app, but it's time for me to move on. You really should take notice that this "feature" change has caused more user reaction than anything else on these forums — and perhaps in this case, you are in the wrong. In my line of work, we estimate that for every person who actually takes time to respond to such an action represents about another 50 unhappy people who remain quiet.

Good luck with the future of Doggcatcher, and if I ever become dissatisfied with whatever replaces it, I will check in to see whether my former first-choice app has improved.

Very Disappointed

Getting rid of the long press was a HUGE mistake. Without the long press I can no longer read the “show notes” to see if this is something I want to download. The “hamburger dots” crash my DoggCatcher. So I effectively have no way of accessing a very important feature. I’m on an older phone and Android version (LG G2, 4.2.2). I was hoping that the latest version would fix the dot issue but no such luck. I really just want the older version and can’t understand as a paying customer why I don’t have access to it. I'd even pay again to get my long press back. Please don't make me go to another podcast player.

Horrible Poorly Thought Through Change

I am another user (and a very longtime user) of Doggcatcher that is not happy with the removal of the long press functionality in the episode list. The tiny little dots menu works terribly and the "larger" target area is not an inprovement. Almost every time I try to get the menu, the episode starts playing instead.

This change also makes the functionality of Doggcatcher inconsistent from list to list, since longpress for menu continues to exist in the podcast list (I hope to God you're not getting rid of that too).

I have never wanted to select multiple episodes at once and it has never even cross my mind that I would want to do that. Talk about throwing out basic functionality, for obscure who cares functionality.

I really have been disappointed for a long time with the constant interface changes to Doggcatcher. It used to be great, but just keeps changing for the sake of change. This means I have to relearn the interface for no reason every coupld months and the changes are usually for the worse. The little progress circle on episodes is not hearly as useful as the old progress line. The tiny podcast image in the control bar at the bottom of the episode lists makes the actual controls (especially dragging the progress bar there) nearly useless.

After years and years as a Doggcatcher user I wish I could have my money back. I didn't pay for something just to have it constanty change and get worse. I liked what I paid for, not this. I'm ready to switch to BeyondPod.

Doggcatcher really needs to reevaluate it's design process. It's been misguided for a very long time. The removal of long press is the last straw for me.

Significant UI Problem

The change from long press to hamburger dots on the episode list is a major UI problem. I've been a very happy user of DoggCatcher for many years, but must strongly request that this UI change is reverted. Multiple selection of episodes via long press is an almost worthless feature, which has displaced the very useful popup menu I used multiple times per day.

I know where the dots menu is

I know where the dots menu is, and I've been trying to get used to it for a few weeks to no avail. It remains difficult to use and much less intuitive than long-press on the episode name. Most of the time I try to hit the dots menu I end up playing or downloading the episode instead. This is not a UI improvement, and would very much like to see it reverted. Do you have any UI metrics on how often the context menu is used vs. how often anyone would need to multi-select episodes?

Switch the two menus' functionality?

I don't know if this has been suggested before, but maybe the current long press and dots menu functions could be reversed, so long press would give you the episode menu, and the dots menu would give you the multi-select functionality. I don't think that wouldn't really be in line with how the majority of other apps do multi-select though.
Personally I'm fine with it either way. I really would like the ability to multi-select episodes and perform batch functions on them, but if the long press = multi-select functionality is too inconvenient for some people, I wouldn't mind having it the other way around.

I'm still experimenting with

I'm still experimenting with some different ways of supporting multi select and popping up the menu but I haven't found anything that is consistent with the rest of the google apps. If it's not, it is just going to confuse people.

The vast majority of the comments I've heard about the long press is that it's too easy to miss the context button. The current market version still has a bug in that there are spots you can press near the context menu that act like pressing on the episode rather than opening the context menu. I've fixed that and also increased the target area of the context button some more. So basically if (on a phone) you press on the rightmost 1/4 of the episode, the menu will pop up. That should eliminate most of the accidental presses.

Started looking at other apps due to this change

The loss of long press for menu options also caused me to start looking elsewhere at other podcast apps after using this one for a very long time.

Especially when running or driving, etc, the loss of this feature is very annoying.

I went through the trouble of registering this account solely to voice this complaint on this otherwise good app that I use daily.

The need or want to multi select episodes has never crossed my mind. I subscribe to 30+ podcasts currently.

I am currently using an app that starts with "Pock" and ends with "et Casts." It has some annoyances too, and I'd rather stick with Doggcatcher if they ever correct this mistake.

I'd also like to ask for the long press on episodes back. I keep accidentally playing an episode instead of hitting the menu icon on the side.

Keeping this thread alive.

I wonder if all the people that had an issue with this have found another app? If so, please let me know which one. The loss of the long press for context has made the once best podcast app unusable. I need to have a case on my phone which prevents me from actually hitting the hamburger button. It usually takes about 20 or so tries. Oh, But, thank god for the multiple select! A feature that shows me four icons, a square, a square with checkmark, a trashcan and a knife, of which I can only infer what 1 of does!
Anyway, please make the hamburger button bigger.
