Virtual Feed won't auto-play next file

I performed a forum search on "virtual feed doesn't play next file" and only found the two responses below, which don't seem to help.

From 2010: Virtual-feed files play one at a time
http://www.doggcatcher.com/node/1021

From 2011: Handling Audio Books
http://www.doggcatcher.com/node/2190

This affects several past versions; I'm currently using 1.2.4046, release channel Paid. Auto Play advanced correctly before; I don't recall how long ago.

I have verified in the top-level settings that auto-play is selected:
Settings >> Audio Player >> Auto Play is selected
"Start playing the next audio file when current one finishes"

My file names in the virtual feed are named by start date: YYYY-MM-DD File Name
2012-01-23 Podcast on birds
2012-02-15 Podcast on bees
2012-02-26 Podcast on what happens after birds and bees
etc.

Play Order is set to Newest First. This displays the first. At the end of the audio, it does not advance "down" to the file under it on the list and start playing.
I changed the Play Order to Oldest First. This displays the first (Dec files on the top of the list, Jan files on the bottom). At the end of the audio, it does not advance "up" to the file above it on the list.

I did check the created by date; I downloaded them mostly in the order that matches their filename / airdate.

Another symptom: Performing a long-press on the "mark complete and advance to next podcast" will mark the current podcast complete, but then doggcatcher just stops. It does not advance to the next podcast.

Please fix; I use doggcatcher on long motorcycle rides and it's real hard to get the phone out of my pocket, pick the next podcast with one hand at 65 mph, while wearing leather gloves. Right now, the program has become useless to me.

Virtual Feed Playlist

Did you create a User or Dynamic playlist for the feed or are you using the system playlist "All from virtual feeds"? If not, Long press on the feed & press flag all new, then from audio screen, select "All from virtual feeds" With "Auto-Play on, all episodes from virtual feed playlist will be played

If you have more than one virtual feed, create a User or Dynamic playlist for each feed

I created the virtual feed by

I created the virtual feed by doing the following:
+ Menu (the upper left menu with Refresh, Subscribe, Download Queue, Categories, Sleep Timer, Event Log)
>> Subscribe >> Virtual Feed >> Choose an existing directory.

When I play the audio files, I'm playing them by going to the Feed tab >> selecting the feed name.
That brings up a list of files, and I select one to play.
It will not advance to the next file, despite the options settings.

I just tried the Audio Tab and see the options for playing feeds, including "All from virtual feeds."
It's late, I will try that tomorrow.

Thanks for pointing that to me. I'm new to this player, thus my ignorance.

Question: If I can select a feed, play a file from the feed, and the feed has the option to play the next file....am I wrong to assume that the player should advance? Isn't that why the option is there in the feed menu (not a smart alec question; I'm serious and trying to understand how DoggCather "thinks.").

Virtual Feeds

I'f you're using the system playlist "All from virtual feeds" or any playlist from DC's "Audio" or "Video" tab and "Auto-Play" is enabled..either from the "Car Mode" screen (Press on feed thumbnail on bottom left of the screen on the media control bar) then press the "A" icon (Top Right of the Screen) or (In the DC Menu>Settings>Audio Player>Auto Play) DC will play the next episode in the playlist. If "Auto-Play" is enabled and episodes do not advance, then the playlist is empty.

Virtual Feed plays different than regular feeds (v1.2.4098 paid)

I eventually figured out that feeds are not all treated the same.
- If you have an RSS Feed like NPR News, it will finish playing one story, then auto-play the next
- Using the exact same settings, I have a virtual feed. No matter how I have set it up, the vitual feed of downloaded MP3's plays one story...then stops.

The solution is somewhat simple: take virtual feeds and place them into a playlist, and then play them. It's somewhat annoying, but not horribly so.
The better solution would be for Doggcatcher to play virtual feeds the same as regular feeds.
I have suggested that, but after several updates it has not been implemented.

DC uses playlists to playback

DC uses playlists to playback episodes from all feeds including virtual ones (Default System Playlists All - sorted by feed/date/All - sorted by date Playlists from Audio or Video Tabs RSS URL Feeds ) you have to create Dynamic or User playlists to episodes particular virtual feeds in sequence or select All Virtual feeds playlist on the audio tab header

See user guide article on playlists http://www.doggcatcher.com/node/1755 & article on virtual feeds http://www.doggcatcher.com/node/1810

Thank you, those have a lot

Thank you, those have a lot of good information.
I'm not blaming the program or any person, it's just that DC has a steep users curve compared to some other programs I've used. I hope my frustration is at least understandable.
- I have a bunch of news-type MP3's on my card
- I directed DC to them and can see all the individual files loaded into the virtual feed. It's like a track listing
- But I cannot play this virtual feed (one file after another) without first sending all the files to a new place, the playlist, where it again lists all the files.
Why not just play normally down the list of files in the feed? I really feel like I'm missing the obvious.

I've read in several places online that DC is the most powerful of all the podcasters out there. I can see it does a lot, and I like the extra features I found, but the trade-off is it becomes intimidating for new users who just want to do something simple. I'll admit, I'm hampering myself because I use a different product for general podcasting; it's not near as full featured, but it is very easy. It does not allow speed control, it does not allow virtual feeds.

Virtual Feed won't auto-play next file

Thank you for asking this question. I now know I have an additional step/s to do in playlist. I recall older versions just playing the next episode in a feed and moving to the next feed just by selecting auto Play. This was once an excellent feature especially while driving which I do allot of and can't look at the player. I re-iterate Wayne Doggs comments. I very nearly gave up on the DC because of this but there really isn't a better platform out there yet.
Thanks Again
