Turn off cover image in seekbar?

I'm sorry, but I simply hate the change that put the cover image of the currently-playing podcast in the seekbar area. This is a terrible design choice and I can't figure out how to turn it off. IS there a way to turn it off?

I already wish I could put fewer things in that seekbar. I want bigger targets for when I'm driving. I wish I could completely customize it and have nothing but the seekbar, rewind, play/pause, and fast forward. Having that image in there makes the seekbar completely useless because it's such a small target.

Car Mode Screen

That is the car mode icon, it replaces the playing screen/tab and the recent update also moves the auto-play icon to the car mode screen. Press on the icon to activate the car mode screen. Currently there isn't away to disable the icon.

You should try the feature, I think it's what you're asking for "bigger targets while driving"

There were a few requests for this feature from other users of DC

I have no idea what you're talking about with "car mode." I'm not using any sort of car mode, at least not that I know about. If I'm being forced into using such a mode, I do not like it. I wasn't using the app in the car, or even on bluetooth. I was looking at the same view I've always looked at, the audio list with the controls at the bottom.

I swear, if there isn't a choice to remove this cover art I'm going to be switching to a new podcatcher. I've used Doggcatcher since the very beginning, I've been a huge supporter of it, and this is the first time there's been a change that I absolutely despise.

The change that was made

The change that was made specifically to address what you are looking to do, unless I'm misunderstanding you. Try pressing on the cover image. That'll pop up a new screen with larger controls that is better to suited to using the app in the car.

But that just makes for a

But that just makes for a more complex UI. I was fine with the single view that I've had since 2009 when you released your app. I have my list of new podcast episodes and the controls to play them back. Ever since then, the controls area has gotten more and more cluttered with more buttons.

Here's an example of why having that cover art is a bad UI choice. Just look at the two "different" sizes of the control playback bar (when it isn't hidden). The only difference between the two now is that the cover art is bigger. The controls stay almost the same exact size.

All I'm asking is that there be an option to turn that thing off.

Besides, if I want to control the playback in the car, I do it from the lock screen.

Sorry, I'm just really displeased with this decision. If I want a car mode, I should be able to choose if I want it. I shouldn't be forced to have a giant portion of the UI devoted to a shortcut to get to it.

What kind of device are you

What kind of device are you using? The buttons should get 1.5 times larger when the display is set to large.

Whenever I make UI changes, I try to do my best to keep consistent with what has been there in the past, but it's not always possible. Sometimes I need to make choices though that aren't the best for some, while being better for most. I tried to make the thumbnail as small as possible, it's only slightly larger than the autoplay button that was removed.

I'll do what I can to make minimize the impact though. One thought was to possibly have the thumbnail be configured to start playing audio, and then launch the car mode screen...that should get you to larger controls with the some number of button presses as before.

I'm using a Nexus 5. I somewhat believe you when you say the buttons increase 1.5x, but it looks like all of that is in height, which is only marginally helpful (about half-helpful).

I hear what you're saying, and I know I'm coming across as the usual irritated user, but I have to push back on your reasoning in one area: the seek bar. IMO, that seek bar is absolutely unusable in the traditional view mode (at least in portrait). It was already difficult to accurately place the transport at a certain place in the podcast, but not the difference in 2mm can be a difference in 15 minutes! Your response might be "but car mode!" But then why have that seek bar - or the rest of the controls for that matter - in the traditional view at all? Even if I weren't driving, I would never be able to use that seek bar.

I see what you're going for with this, and I think the car mode looks nice, but I disagree that it's the right move. It adds complexity, because it takes me one step farther away from home base, and I now have to start messing with the back button to get to where I want to be, or if I get kicked out of the car mode screen I have to find the cover art icon and get it back.

I've long hoped that you would remove stuff from the controls and make the useful controls larger. Now you're moving the other way (I don't care if it's in the car mode, that doesn't help it hurts). That's why I hate to say it but I'm going to have to start considering other apps.

Here's what would keep me: so there's that button that changes the size of the control bar, right? It switches between three settings: off, small, and "large." Add a fourth mode that simplifies the button layout to the buttons used most often (if you can get a consensus on that) and doesn't have that cover art button at all. That way I can still stay on one screen, and control AND select my podcasts.

Add a 4th toggle to hide the feed thumbnail would definitely be a good way to go if I made this change. Most of the comments I have received about the way it current is so far were positive (but not all). We'll have to see what comments continue to come in before making a final call on this one.

I do appreciate you taking the time to voice your opinion.

I created an issue to track this.

Hello,Glad you posted this

Hello,

Glad you posted this because when I could not find an option to turn it off. I came to site looking for solutions.

It would be nice if there was an option to remove the cover image from the seek bar. It really makes the area very small with a small screen and my fingers are pretty big. Don't want to use car mode when not in a car. Since this is a user interface issue it should be optional like the having a grid display for the feeds is optional.

I also noticed that when you minimize the seek bar the cover image disappears. The cover image changes sizes when toggling the seek bar modes. Some of my feeds don't have an cover image so the default cover image is displayed which is absolutely useless.

Thanks

Ok, I'm done. I had a long post that apparently was deemed spam by this forum software. Supposedly it was under review, but that was this morning.

I still don't know if I'm going to dump Doggcatcher after using it for 5 years, but I'm certainly not happy about this change.
