I really would like DoggCatcher to shut down whenever I use my phone's Back button, just like any other regular Android app does, and not require me to perform three additional clicks to manually select the Exit Application command whenever I want it to do so.
DC will exit by using the back button, but won't exit during scheduled feed updates, downloading and/or playing back media files. Exit Application (In the DC Menu) is the only way to override those scenarios. Most users of DC would like DC to run in the background while updating feeds, downloading and/or playing back media files.
Also, DC isn't doing anything in the background when it's not updating feeds or downloading media files. Android is designed in a way that it is expected to kill apps when resources are needed for other apps. DC will get killed as soon as another app needs the memory.
