Not playing video podcasts

Let me start off by saying that DC is a great catcher and has a nice, clean interface that so far does everything I've wanted it to.

However, I seem to have hit a pretty significant road block, and I'm not sure of the cause.

I have two video feeds, Diggnation (http://revision3.com/diggnation/feed/Quicktime-Small) and TRS (http://revision3.com/trs/feed/Quicktime-Small). Both are correctly finding and downloading the episodes, but, for the most part, DC will not play them. There have been a few random occasions where it DID play one of them, but most of the time I get the error "Cannot play file"

Both feeds download .mp4 files and can be played in the default video player.

Any suggestions?

I'll check it out

That's strange because DC just launches the android video player to play videos. There were some problems with the revision3 videos for a short period of time while they were making changes to their encoding parameters, but it doesn't seem that it could be related.

I'm downloading some the trs media now, I'll let you know how it goes.

I'm having the same problem.

I've got a few video podcasts including Tekzilla and Viral Video Film School (so not just Rev3 shows) and I notice that if I download a show and then immediately try to watch it, I have no issues. If I try to watch it later (maybe after a reboot?) I get "Cannot play file". If I tell Doggcatcher to delete and re-download the file, it works fine.

BTW, I'm using a Droid and everything else is working great.

You know, I may be seeing the same.

I didn't want to push it, because I thought I may be crazy, but I'm PRETTY sure that DC played these video pcasts at least once. Presumably just after DLing them, as you said.

I'm also using a Droid, but the only vid podcasts I subscribe to are the Rev 3s. Strange part is if I go to Astro and find the files, they play fine.

I think I know

I believe the Enable Media Scan option is causing this. It's a bug with android that on a re-index after a reboot or a USB connection the system will delete video files that are contained in directories or sub-directories that contain a .nomedia file. android wipes out the file, but DC doesn't know about it, so it still shows up as New or In-Progress.

There's a topic about it on this forum, and also in the android forum. You might expect me to provide the link at this point, but unfortunately I have to run, sorry.

I don't believe this is the case, the files aren't being deleted. They just wont play in dc. I've seen that thread you're referring to.

Email log

Can one of you guys send me your log right after you try to play a video and it fails. We may get some more info there.

In the dc menu, press on debug log, then send it to support at snoggdoggler.com.

Are both of you guys on droids (I saw that one was)?

Thanks.

Enable media scan

I got your log, but nothing good in there.

Do you have your 'enable media scan' preference enabled or disabled?

It's all the way at the bottom of the preferences.

Can you try enabling that

Can you try enabling that preference and then do an update of all the feeds...that makes this preference change 'take'.

I know that's not a good long term solution but it would narrow the problem down quite a bit.

If that solves the problem then I've got an incompatibility with disabling the media scan and launching the external player.

Thanks for helping with this.

I enabled media scanning and

I enabled media scanning and updated the feeds.

Tried to play a video from both DN and TRS, same error.

Checked the default Droid "Gallery" app, the videos are not listed there. However, the .nomedia file is no longer in any of the directories.

Rebooted the phone, now they are showing in the Gallery.

Tried to play them from DC.. annnnd... it works!

So, that's strange. I'd definitely rather not have all the podcasts showing up in the gallery, but as a short term fix, let's hope this works. I'll keep messin with it and try to break it again without disabling the media scan.

And I don't mind helping.. I work in the tech support industry and enjoy programming, so it's nothing. I'm actually at work right now :P

That's a big help

So what's happening is after a video gets downloaded it gets scanned by the android media scanner (the .nomedia file is ignored at this point). So if you play it now, it works. Later on, the media scanner runs again, sees the .nomedia file there, removes the video from the media store (gallery). Then when DC tries to launch the video, DC can't find it in the media store anymore and the launch fails.

Now that I get what's happening I should be able to figure out a way to fix it. Thanks for taking the time to worth this through with me.

I created a mantis issue for this.

Interesting. Are audio

Interesting. Are audio podcasts not accessed through the media store? Seems strange that it'd only affect video. Glad you're making sense of it, either way.

Now, would I be able to manually add the .nomedia file to the dirs that have audio pcasts? (or, conversely, turn the do not scan option back on then manually remove it from the video folders) or would DC undo that whenever it updated the feeds?

Audio vs video

Audio files are played through an internal player that don't rely on what's in the gallery. Videos are launched into the external player, which requires (I think) that the items are in the gallery. This is some old code...it has been like this for a long time. It interesting catching bugs that have been around for months.

I wouldn't bother adding/removing the .nomedia files. Every time DC updates a feed, it makes sure the .nomedia is either there or not depending on the preference...it will be relentless.

I've got a release going to the market in a few days. I should have the fix for this in the one after that.

One more thing

We also need to trigger android to rescan the sdcard. We can do that by rebooting, or possibly by mounting the phone as usb (this use to work, not sure if it still does).

If this is too much trouble, don't worry about it. I'm trying to see if I can reproduce it, but I'm pretty sure the preference is conflicting with the video launching.

I'm having this problem on my Hero...

I know this thread is a few weeks old, but I'm getting these same crashes working with video. Looks like the RSS feeds I found through DC's search were intended for ipods. The extension on the video's that won't play are all .m4v. I was able to play them with AndExplorer if I renamed them to an .mp4 extension...

*edit* Wow. I fail at posting. sorry this landed in the middle of the thread.

Oh, and to be clear - DC does not crash for me with feeds that serve up videos with an .mp4 extension. The phone refuses completely to deal with files ending in .m4v either from a file manager or DC.

I'll take a look

Can you please post the feed URL?

You might want to renaming one of the files to mp4 and try to launch it from a file manager. If it won't play there, then the video format is probably not supported and won't work in DC. If it does, then there might be something I can do in DC to handle that file extension.

Thanks for posting.

That's exactly what I did. I

That's exactly what I did. I renamed the files in a file manager, and the phone was able to play them. It just seems to trip over the extension.
Two feeds that do this are:

http://rssnewsapps.ziffdavis.com/audioblogs/crankygeeks/cg.ipod.xml

and

http://podcast.msnbc.com/audio/podcast/MSNBC-COUNTDOWN-NETCAST-M4V.xml

m4v

Had I read your post completely I would have seen that you said you tried renaming the files, sorry about that.

For the crankygeeks, try this url, it's in mp4 format. It works fine on my emulator.

http://feeds2.feedburner.com/ziffdavis/cgmpeg4video

For the countdown, I tried to find a feed for the mp4 version but it seems that you can only download one item at a time. I created a mantis issue to see if I can get the m4v extensions launched properly in the video player.

Same problem on the Hero

I have the HTC Hero on Sprint and I'm having similar problems with videos not playing in DogCatcher but playing in other video programs. I've noticed this problem with Cali Lewis' geekbrief.tv feed and with Cnet's loaded feed. Is there anything I can do to fix this? Thanks for all your help.

Video problems

Can you describe the problem that you are seeing and post the urls for the feeds and I'll take a look.

Thanks for the post.
