Improve Android 4.3 Bluetooth AVRCP 1.3 Support

Hi everybody,

I've been using DoggCatcher as my Google Listen replacement for 8 months now and have loved it. I just updated my Galaxy Nexus to 4.3 and discovered the new Bluetooth features that were introduced. I connected my phone to the radio in my Subaru and saw that instead of just having "BT Audio" displayed I now had the ability to see track information (artist, album, & title) and play time. I tried playing an album through the Play Music app and everything showed up on my radio's display just like if it was playing from a CD. I then switched over to DoggCatcher to listen to Tech News Today's audio podcast. Sadly, I didn't get the same info. The play timer never incremented from 0:00, no artist or album was listed, and the track title listed the same info as the title in DoggCatcher, "Tech News Today 804: We Know Who the Real Creep is". When I played the episode through the Play Music app (not opened with "play in exernal player" but opened Play Music and selected the podcast) then I did get the track information on my radio. It showed up like this.

Artist: TWiT
Album: Tech News Today
Track Title: We Know Who the Real Creep is
Play timer followed the app. For example, I could jump to 10:23 in the show and the time showed up on my radio.

Would it be possible to expand the functionality of the Bluetooth features in DoggCatcher to better provide information. I'm guessing the track information won't be changed, but I would love to see the play timer working on my radio so I don't have to look away from driving and unlock my phone.

Thanks.

I just tried DoggCatcher lite today to see if I wanted to buy it.

This is literally the only thing in it that stops me from buying it.

If this gets added in a future release, it'll be a must buy for me.

Track info is currently displayed for BT devices if it's supported by your ROM but not all ROMs support it.

Yeah it seems to work with other podcast apps and the default music app. It's a note 3 btw, on Android 4.3.

I apologize if this has been covered elsewhere. I looked around but this seemed to be the most recent post about this feature so figured I'd piggyback here.

Just got the 4.3 upgrade for my HTC EVO 4G LTE so I have the AVRCP 1.3 features. Pretty nice to see the track name. I noticed when I hit the TEXT button, it tries to show Artist and Album and both read "no title". Not a big issue, at all, but for the sake of completeness, it might be cool to at least see the podcast name appear as the "Artist" if no information was available.

Here's a screenshot of the podcast I was listening to (Big O And Dukes) along with three photos (cropped for compactness) of my stereo display. Default display, Artist display, Album display.

Phone: HTC EVO 4G LTE, Android 4.3 (recent official but non-OTA update)
Car: 2011 Camry Hybrid, stock JBL stereo

Thanks!

Hmm... as you see on the link I posted, my stereo is only getting the track name. The artist and album don't appear to be populated.

I'll have to verify, but pretty sure the artist and/or album show up using something else like Google Play.

Are you broadcasting the artist/album from the MP3 ID3 data or from the podcast feed data? Not sure if the MP3s from this feed have proper ID3 data or not. If you're relying on ID3 data, it would be cool to fall back on the feed name if ID3 isn't populated.

Let me know if there's anything you'd like me to check/test.

It's the same broadcast that sets all three fields (artist, album, track). The values come from DC's database of feeds that you are subscribed to.

I just reloaded DoggCatcher

I just reloaded DoggCatcher today. I had removed it after receiving the KitKat update on my S4 last week.

I too am only getting the show title on my car's head unit (2013 Toyota RAV4) but now it does change when the next podcast on the list starts to play which it wasn't doing before.

I also have PocketCasts but I much prefer DoggCatcher; the BT meta data transfer is much better with PocketCasts. Artist, album and track info as well as the progress bar and elapsed time are show when I use PocketCasts.

If you can get his fixed to match the BT meta data features of PocketCasts then DoggCatcher will be perfect in my opinion.

Keep up the good work - I'm looking forward to these issues being resolved soon.

Looks like I may have

Looks like I may have celebrated prematurely.

Today I can't even get the show title to display. Why is DC so inconsistent in its ability to broadcast BT metadata?

I would fall back in love with DC if you could get this to work. Until then I'm stuck using PocketCasts.

I think I've figured it out.

I think I've figured it out.

The lockscreen controls MUST be TURNED ON for BT metadata data to be broadcast. I turn it off because I don't use a lockscreen or the lockscreen controls.

You might want to force that setting on or warn users that things might not work right if it is turned off. I recall seeing that warning in Pocket Casts.

Now that this is resolved, any way you can get the time elapsed and the progress bar to work as shown in this photo:

https://plus.google.com/photos?pid=6010314510905759682&oid=1139293873159...

Both Pocket Casts and Rocket Player do this and while it isn't critical it is nice to have.

Thanks.

I saw the update hit my phone

I saw the update hit my phone yesterday.

Today my car, briefly, showed a progress number but it was just 00'00. When I stopped to take a picture of it it went away and never returned.

What's the timeline for including that feature?

The screen still worked just fine. The 00'00 time stamp appeared briefly while I was playing a podcast then only the time stamp disappeared - the rest of the meta data was still displayed.
