Variable Speed Playback on V1.2.4023

I had been using Doggcatcher all night on my Galaxy S3 when I noticed there was an update. I paused the podcast I was listening to an updated the app. I started having issues with podcasts being scratchy/popping/robotic like. I've never had any issues before the update. If I play at 3.0x speed, it's gets very bad. 2.5x its not as bad. There doesn't seem to be any issues in the few minutes I've played at 1.5x speed. Also the issue never happens when I have the phone unlocked and the screen is active. After the screen turns off and the phone locks the problem starts.

Power saving mode is not enabled and I have restarted the phone.

I know speeds higher than 2x are not supported, but I have a lot of content I listen to so 3x is needed for me. It's always worked perfectly before this update. Is there a way to roll back to the previous version I was using?

Thank you.

Variable Speed Issue

Disable variable Speed in the settings, then uninstall/reinstall Presto

That has helped ease it a lot. The popping/scratching is more uncommon now, but not completely gone. It makes it listenable. Thank you.

Can you do me a favor and make the problem happen again by playing some audio and let the screen turn off (that is what causes is right?), and then send me debug log (in the DC menu).

I think the new variable speed might be letting the device go into a low power mode and causing the problem. If that's the case, I can probably prevent that.

Thanks.

Just sent it off, and yes, it only happens when the screen is locked. As soon as I activate the screen the problem stops.

Sadly the beta update didn't

Sadly the beta update didn't fix the issue. I spend about 8 hours listening to podcasts when working, as I work thirds. Well, I worked last night and got to test the update. It would go from horrendous, to occasional, to where it wouldn't happen for ten or twenty minutes. Again, it would only do it when the screen was off.

Anything more I can do or information I can provide in trying to resolve this?

Bummer, I've got something to try just to narrow this down.

Can you try the different settings in DC's settings/screen on when playing. Try out each of the dim, bright and off but awake. Those are all the different ways we can prevent a device from going to sleep or low power mode so I'm hoping one of those is gonna work.

Thanks.

Also, have you tried to see if this happens with variable speed disabled?

I just played around with

I just played around with this quite a bit comparing presto and the built in variable speed. With presto, when you set the speed faster than the device can play without dropping audio frames, it just doesn't play any faster. Presto seems to top out at about 2.0, even when you have it set higher.

The built in variable speed plays at the speed you set absolutely but gets staticky when it is dropping frames.

I think what presto does is probably better but I can't get higher than about 2.0 on the four devices I tried, including an s3.

Just noticed this reply. I

Just noticed this reply.

I don't know anything about it honestly. I'm just a user, but I do know that it plays faster for me, or at least certainly seems to. I can complete a 3 hour podcast in an hour at 3x speed and it also sounds MUCH faster compared to 2x speed. 2x speed make it take an hour and a half. I've always just gotten the warning that anything higher than 2x wasn't supported but it always works. I've tried going past 3x speed as a test, but that it absolutely doesn't allow.

Also, I'm not sure what I'm using anymore. Before I downloaded and used presto prior to the 1.2.4023 update where the variable speed update was introduced. If I have variable speed enabled in the settings then I can use it. If I disable variable speed it just makes that button disappear that's in the bottom right corner of the main screen. Does the update still use presto or is the new variable speed unique to doggcatcher and doesn't require presto?

The current version of the

The current version of the app will not use presto, but instead use an internal variable player.

It doesn't happen when playing at 2x speeds or slower so I just assumed it didn't happen when it was disabled, so I've not tried that.

Also, changing the screen settings seems to have fixed it. I've used each one, high, dim, and screen off for about 20 minutes each and it's worked fine. I'll be working again tomorrow so I'll give it a much longer test.

Been awhile since I've updated, sorry. I've had a lot going on lately.

It seems setting the screen settings isn't a permanent fix. Just a big battery drain. I managed to get it to work perfectly for two hours, but then the static started again.

I also thought I found a fix in force stopping the app and starting it again, but that didn't last long.
