Option for autoplay behaviour - first "new" in list rather than next in list

Hi

I ordered my podcasts by feed in the playlist, as I wanted to listen to podcasts in a kind of "priority" order - for instance if the newest podcast on my device is from feed 3 and I start listening, then a new podcast comes in from feed 1 or 2, I want to play the new podcast from feed 1 or 2 next, even if some of the existing podcasts on the other feeds have an earlier date. I assumed that is what having a playlist in feed order would do, but I found that, for example, currently when the podcast from feed 3 finishes, autoplay will take me to the *next* item in the list - which will be from feed 3, 4 or 5, as the items from feeds 1 & 2 have been added above feed 3 - I can understand the behaviour but it's not quite what I was hoping for :)

There's two possible ways (that I can see) to look at an option to allow the behaviour I'd like - obviously the default could be the current behaviour - but would be nice to have an option to either :

1) make autoplay play the *first* un-listened-to item on the playlist, instead of the *next* item *after* the one that finishes playing
or
2) make the currently playing item always appear as the *first* item in the playlist, with all other items appearing in the usual chosen order after it.

Practically this would work out the same way - I could choose feed order, listen to a bunch of podcasts and then when a new podcast comes in for a feed that I've put first, it would automatically be played next

Hope this makes some sense. I'm loving doggcatcher so far, other than this everything works exactly as I'd expect - very nice!

Cheers,
Sam

I have just discovered

I have just discovered something - strangely, If I have the playlist in date order instead, and (for instance) manually download a podcast older than the one currently playing so that it is inserted at the top of the list, it does seem to pick that one up first...

I have an existing issue that is pretty close to what you're asking. This would always auto-play the first in the playlist regardless of the position of the current episode.

Hi Eric,Long time user,

Hi Eric,

Long time user, first time commenter :-) If I could, I would like to augment the linked feature request.

Essentially I would like to put my feeds into one of three classes:

A. listen NOW
B. listen next
C. listen in normal order

When I press play, (or DC auto-plays from a Bluetooth connection being established etc.), my desired behavior is:

1. if there are any new episodes in any class A feeds, DC immediately acts as if I had started playback starting with the first class A feed
2. otherwise, keep playing as normal, but on the conclusion of whatever thing I am listening to, if there are any new episodes in any class B feeds, act as if I had tapped to begin playback starting with the first class B feed

My use case for #1 is that I have a couple podcasts that post daily or near-daily, and their episodes are smallish, maybe 2-5 minutes. The daily part means I prefer not to fall too far behind on them, and the shortness means I can interrupt whatever I had in progress last time to catch up and not have it be too jarring or distracting.

I have some other podcasts that are less frequent or have longer episode runtimes that I would still prefer to prioritize first, but are not *so* important that I care to interrupt the flow of listening.

I suppose an alternate implementation would be to give each class of podcast its own playlist, but I'd still need a way to specify the interrupt behavior (and chain them together, i.e. when you reach the end of playlist A, go on to playlist B, etc. -- probably this piece of the functionality already exists today? I am happy to RTFM if so :-) )

Thanks!

As I was reading this, I

As I was reading this, I started to get the same picture that you describe at the end, where you would have multiple playlist with a way to determine the play priority for each. So when you hit the end of one, DC would switch to another playlist.

I think that would cover your scenario right?

Sorry the spam filter got you.

This is the only thing that

This is the only thing that is missing from DoggCatcher. I switched to DC a while back, and even the barebones Google Listen had this.

This seems like a rather easy thing to add, and I would be eternally grateful if it were implemented!

I'd prefer to finish the

I'd prefer to finish the current episode then play the top of the playlist.

So if the playlist was most-recent first and while I was listening to an episode for the 1st of month, as soon as I finished listening the playlist would be recalculated. If during the listening to the 1st, 2nd and 3rd were downloaded, then the next thing played should be the 3rd.

I agree, I was rather disappointed the playlist didn't do this considering the app slots the new episodes into the list in the correct order!

Please can we have the option for DC to jump to the top of the playlist after finishing the current episode, that way whatever we have for our feed orders will also dictate the playlist order.

Love the app and how configurable it is.

Thanks!

Is this still on the todo

Is this still on the todo list? The issue-tracking link above is dead so I can't check its progress.

Issue 1421 is still on Eric's to do list http://mantis.doggcatcher.com/view.php?id=1421 - Preference to autoplay the first episode in the playlist immediately after download if another episode is already playing.

Thanks for the links. That's not exactly what I was expecting, though. I was hoping for a feature than when the current episode is finished, it would autoplay the first item in the playlist rather than the next one. Is there a similar to-do for that?

?

"When the current episode is finished, it would autoplay the first item in the playlist rather than the next one." is issue 1421.

What do mean by the first item in the playlist, if it's not the first episode in the playlist immediately after download?

Your quote describes what I

Your quote describes what I want, but it's not issue 1421 as I read it. From the page you linked:

"Summary 0001421: Preference to autoplay the first episode in the playlist immediately after download if another episode is already playing"

This issue repeatedly requests that DC stop playing the current episode, rather than audoplay the first item (rather than the next) when the current episode is finished. That's a whole different behavior that I don't think anybody in this thread requested.

Issue 1421

The intent of issue 1421 is immediately after download, the episode would be added to the playlist and autoplay next..once the current episode is completed.

I spoke to Eric (DC developer) to verify this
