Sort Order reversed?

I like my podcasts in order of Oldest First, so I can listen in chronological order. My global setting is set to Oldest First, but all of a sudden my podcasts are listed Newest First. The only way to get them in Oldest First order is to choose Newest First! Has anyone else experienced this?

You can toggle the display

You can toggle the display order with the up/down arrow buttons on the top right of most of the screens. This does not affect the play order, just the display.

I've seen that suggestion

I've seen that suggestion elsewhere, too, but I don't have those arrows.

The arrows are on the audio or video screens, press or swipe to the audio screen

those arrows have no effect

those arrows have no effect on the order my feeds are listed, it only reverses the alphabetical order of my feeds.

edit: i mean the alphabetical order of my feeds is altered, not the order of the individual episodes of each feed

DC plays back episodes from

DC plays back episodes from the bottom up,the arrows does not affect the play order, just the display.
You can create a dynamic playlist ( http://www.doggcatcher.com/node/1755 ) & configure a category for the feed, leave the play order oldest first. When you select a dynamic playlist, DC will playback the feed however you have set it oldest first or newest first.

Ahh, we're talking about different things. I thought you meant episodes. The feeds are in the order that they were added or in the order that the user places them in by long pressing and then 'move'.

DC doesn't re-order the feeds at all.

Feed Order

I think that would be a good feature to have, and I hope it's worth the developers' consideration. Other apps I have used offer the option to sort feeds either alphabetically, or in order of most recently-updated. I prefer the latter option, as it's a convenient way to see which feeds have the newest content available. I know that the Audio tab offers a somewhat similar view, but it would still be nice to have automatic re-order option in the Feeds tab.

episodes displayed correctly

episodes displayed correctly for me until recently, is this a change from the last update or something? I don't understand why it plays from the bottom up, that's super counter-intuitive.

We didn't change anything

We didn't change anything around sorting in quite a few months. If you toggle the arrows, the episodes will flip their display order and then play from the top down.

I think there's about an even split between whether people like it top down or vice versa, I'm with you personally, I like top down.

also, i hope i'm missing something simple but I don't understand why I can't listen to all the episodes of one feed in chronological order, and view them that way.

You should be able to if the feed option "play order" is oldest first, and the arrows are pointing so the thicker one is down.

I think we need to take a step back, I must be misunderstanding you.

If you are on the audio tab, and an episode is playing, when it's finished the episode below it (assuming the thicker is arrow is pointing down) should play.

Are the episodes not playing in the order that the thick arrow is point when you're on the audio tab?

I guess I'm trying to listen

I guess I'm trying to listen to the episodes of a feed from within the "FEEDS" tab. I have an alphabetical list of feeds, I tap the feed to look at the episodes, and play from there. I'm I incredibly stupid? Have I wasted your time? I hope not :(

It's not a waste at all. For everyone that takes the time like you are to post about a problem, there are *lots* more people experiencing that same thing and not asking for help. I would rather understand what's happening so I can try to improve the app. Play order is pretty confusing for a lot of people.

So on the screen for a feed, episodes always play from the bottom up, regardless of the arrows. Most people set up their feeds (including the play order) and then use the audio tab to listen to the episodes, but you could continue to use the feed screen, you just can't change the *display* order there. It's always plays bottom up.

That may sound weird but most often people want new episodes to arrive at the top and to play oldest first. But when they are on the audio tab, they want it to play from the top down.

Thanks for taking the time to post.

I had not used the Category

I had not used the Category feature of DC before, but decided to categorize my feeds today. While on the Audio tab, I can pick that category. Pressing the up/down arrows in the category does seem to re-order the podcasts, but I'm not sure how it's ordering them. It doesn't appear to be chronological or by feed name either.

I want to be able to view them (and play them) in that same order. I want the same order I get for the "All - Sorted by date" default or "All - Sorted by feed/date". It seems like that display/play order does not extend to Categories. True?

Thanks!

The up/down arrows only

The up/down arrows only change the order that the episodes are displayed, not the order that they are played. So the episodes will play in the direction that thicker arrow is pointing.

The feed option 'play order' and the order of the feeds on the feeds tab determine the play order.

I know it's a bit confusing, I've yet to find a good way to make this clear in the app, but I'm still trying.

Ah, I think I finally get it

Ah, I think I finally get it now. You keep pounding away, things finally make it through my thick skull. And reading the User Guide more closely helps, too. :-) I think I see how it works.

I know that UI design is tough, and I appreciate you spending the time here to discuss it, and take input. Thanks!

So...some of my thoughts on this.

On the Audio tab, when I have selected "All - Sorted by date", and I have the LEFT arrow bold, then episodes play in descending chronological order (oldest first). That is how *I* expect it to work in that case.

I guess my hangup is when I started categorizing feeds and looking at one category at a time (treating it like a playlist). Then the Display order on the Audio tab switches to Feed order (from the Feed tab), and then Play order within each particular feed. That doesn't really make sense to me.

To me, the feed list is nothing more than that -- a list of feeds I am monitoring.

The Audio tab is my "playlist", and all of the playlists should behave the same regarding the order in which they play. So if I pick "All", then I see all my feeds. If I pick a particular Category, then I see all the feeds in that Category. If I build a custom playlist, then I see the feeds I have put in that playlist.

But the ORDER of playback should be something that is determined separately for each "list" on the Audio tab (or a default behavior for every list, of course). So your playback options should include chronological order for any list, which doesn't appear to be the case now. In particular, for me, the Category lists are something I'd like to be able to play in chronological order rather than feed order.

Hopefully I'm not missing something, but this is my understanding from this discussion and from going back and reading the User Guide.

What are your thoughts?

Thanks again for Doggcatcher and your willingness to listen!

I wanted to add a possible

I wanted to add a possible option for sorting. Allow a long press on the up/down arrows to show a menu that lets the user choose a play order for the Category list: Chronological, feed/date, etc.

I just wrapped up being able

I just wrapped up being able to define the play order for a playlist, so each dynamic playlist can have it's own order, or it can use the play order defined on the feeds.

I think this simplifies things a great deal because most people will want to just pick an order for a playlist, but those who want a different order per feed can also do that with a couple more steps of configuration.

This should be out in the release after next...in a couple weeks.

Thanks for all your feedback.

Same Problem?

This might be the same problem, but I'm not entirely sure. I currently have 2 Android devices - An HTC M8 and a Nexus 5x. The 5x is new. On the HTC, under the "Feeds" tab, when I select a feed the episodes are sorted within the feed from Newest to Oldest (Newest on top and oldest on the bottom.)

On my 5X, under the "Feeds" tab, when I select a feed the episodes are sorted within the feed from Oldest to Newest (Oldest on top and Newest on the bottom.)

I prefer the way the HTC sorts the episodes, but I can't figure out how to replicate it on the 5x. I can post screenshots if it would help

Display Order

Verify that the "Download Order" is set to "Default' (DC Menu>Settings>Global Feed Options) on the 5X
