Add options for delaying the retry of failed downloads

Scenario:

Sometimes when Doggcatcher attempts to download a podcast, that server is temporarily offline, or the Wifi signal it has detected doesn't provide full internet access (broadband is down, or attempting to connect to an unreliable wifi signal).

In this case, Doggcatcher will attempt the download several times in quick succession then mark it as failed.

Proposed solution:

If we had the option to set the delay between retries (for example: 1 hour, 12 hours or 24 hours), then it would give enough time for the connectivity problem to be resolved, and the download will eventually succeed. That way it wouldn't be necessary to manually intervene and queue the failed downloads.

I have some podcasts where the server is so temperamental that it can fail 2 or 3 times before it succeeds. At the moment I have to manually re-queue it several times, or worse, only realise when I come to listen to the podcast and find it has failed to download.

Hope this can be considered for a future release :)

There are a couple things I can do here.

One is a variation on having a configurable delay and that is to have an increasing delay. So each failure would cause the next retry to wait longer than the previous. That's usually a pretty good method of doing those types of retries.

I created an issue for this - http://mantis.snoggdoggler.com/view.php?id=1073

The other is to have the download failures go back into the queue each time a feed updates. I ran into a problem when I tried to do this before but it's probably worth the effort to get it working. We really want all the downloads to occur without any effort from you.

I've got this one on the todo list already - http://mantis.snoggdoggler.com/view.php?id=962

Thanks for the feedback.

Have either of these been implemented? I can't seem to find them in settings.

DC Preferences

The preference to re-add failed episodes http://mantis.snoggdoggler.com/view.php?id=962 can't or won't be fixed & increasing delay after download failures http://mantis.snoggdoggler.com/view.php?id=1073 is still on Eric's to do list - See change log http://mantis.snoggdoggler.com/roadmap_page.php - listed under DoggCatcher - 1.2.five.after.next

The first one hasn't been

The first one hasn't been done, however the second one has, it's just not a preference. Each time the feeds update, any failed downloads are added to the queue.

That's great - thanks for the reply - both of these approaches would work.

I'd favour an increasing delay as this makes sense (as long as it increased as far as 24 hours - in my experience it sometimes takes this long for a server that is down to come back up). I agree the goal is to have this completely automatic so a user can just expect a podcast to be there without intervention.

Look forward to seeing this implemented at some point :)

On a different note, this

On a different note, this thread does not appear in the Feature Requests forum posts list, when in the default sorting behaviour of 'by date of last reply'. Is there a reason why?

I had to look at my own postings to find the thread, and had assumed it had been dropped. It was originally identified as spam by the filters, if it has a bearing.

The spam module seemed to freak out over that post. I just re-saved it and it appeared.

Thanks for letting me know.
