Audio playback stops when tablet sleeps.

Hi,

I'm using Doggcatcher on a ASUS transformer tablet and have to say it's been a great experience so far. Love the app and it works so well with the tablet and video podcasts. Could almost bin the TV.

Unfortunately, since the ASUS tablet got updated to 3.1 the integrated audio now stops playback when the tablet sleeps (audio only podcasts). Setting the audio player to use the external player works ok but it doesn't handle playback as well, it's easy to loose your position in a long podcast and doggcatcher doesn't know where you are in the podcast or if you've finished.

Any help gratefully received.

Many thanks

That's pretty surely a problem with the ROM. I'm not sure I'm going to be able to do anything about that. This was a problem on some of the Archos tablets a while back (before honeycomb).

So does this happen when you lock the screen manually? Have you tried the 'keep screen' audio preference. Leaving it dim should be enough to keep it from sleeping.

I created an issue for this so we can track it.

Thanks - setting the display

Thanks - setting the display to dim works just fine! :)

It happened both when manually locking the screen or when the tablet timed out and locked itself.

Still happens if you manually lock the screen with the preference set to dim the screen, but if you just leave it to dim itself it works just fine.

I actually prefer it set to dim as it gives me quick access to pause the playback if necessary, sorry I missed this setting before.

Thanks for your help

No problem, we've got a workaround now. Thanks for testing it out.

Hi,This just started

Hi,

This just started happening to me on the acer a500 when I upgraded to 3.1. This is a problem for me since having the screen on is quite an unnecessary drain on the battery (regular screen brightness is often as high as 80% of total battery drain) ... I listen to quite a few audio podcasts. Please see if you can find a fix for this. In the meantime, perhaps change the "keep screen on" option to a very low level of brightness (virtually off?). That would be much better workaround until the final fix!

Love the app otherwise, and would love to see it on a pc.

Thanks for your time making such a great program!

More Input

I just noticed that the Tunein Radio, Winamp, and Pandora apps Do work when the screen is manually turned off (power button) under 3.1 so it should be posible for DC to do so.

Also, oddly the stopping problem only begins after playing the podcast 2-5 minutes with screen off. Then, after turning screen on and podcast resuming, the podcast will stop again immediately after turning screen off a second time. Switch to another podcast and you get a couple more minutes before stopping, then stopping immediately on screen off. Possibly a buffer issue? Does each podcast have it's own cache? I tried clearing the app cache with no long term success. Exiting DC and restarting gives another few minutes of successful playback with screen off before it stops.

Hope this info helps you isolate the problem. I'm willing to help beta test a solution.

Good luck on getting a fix.

So this is really a device

So this is really a device specific issue. All other devices that I'm aware of except for this one and some of the Arcos tablets acquire what's called a 'wake lock' which keep devices from sleeping and this happens automatically when audio is playing.

What I can probably do is add another option to the list of 'keep screen on' preference which basically let's the screen go off but keeps the device awake.

I added you to the beta group, feel free to join in now and when I get this change made you can test it out.

Thanks for posting, here's the issue.

Hi Eric, Thanks for the fast

Hi Eric,

Thanks for the fast response! I did log onto the beta forum and will be watching for the fix. I just finished setting up an Acer A500 for a friend, and of course sold her on DC ... only to find the same problem on her tablet.

When you get to it, I will certainly test out the fix, and post the results on the beta forum!

Thanks Again!

Robert
