Trying to understand media downloading

I've just bought DC and am trying to get it set up to my liking. I'm trying to get media downloaded automatically so that when I walk out of work and onto the subway (i.e., no signal) that I have media all ready for me. I've left the global feed options "Auto downloads" setting at "0" and for a subset of my feeds I've set the "Auto downloads" setting to "2". The screen for the feeds shows one or more items that do not have media downloaded yet. I don't understand the circumstances under which the media is supposed to be auto-downloaded. If I long-press on an item and do "Force Download" it downloads successfully. Neither the "On Wifi" nor "On Power" settings are checked. So why isn't the media auto-downloading?

I'm sure I'm missing something obvious.

Thanks for your help.

DC will only download media

DC will only download media for new items (blue) so chances are, they are old (grey). Just flag the items as new that you want to download and they'll get auto-downloaded on the next feed update. When the publisher adds new items, they will be 'new' and get auto-downloaded according to the auto-download policy.

OK, I guess it was some sort

OK, I guess it was some sort of first-time thing (initial feed update getting be "old" items?) because now it seems to be working. Now onto another confusion: Can you explain what the "Feed update time" and "Feed update interval" settings mean exactly (i.e., what behaviors do they control and in what way)? How can there be a single update time and an update interval?

Thanks.

I just updated the user guide

I just updated the user guide about this, it was *way* out of date. Let me know if you still have questions after reviewing it.

Still missing some media downloads

OK, so now with a few more days of experience, I'm definitely seeing cases where media is not being downloaded for reasons I don't understand. I have a feed that shows a new (blue) item and a state of "Not downloaded". I tap on that item and its state immediately changes to "Queued" and starts downloading. A few moments later it shows "Ready". Any ideas on why this might be happening?

Thanks.

What you are describing as

What you are describing as the manual download process is working exactly as expected.

What is your auto-download set to and how many media files are downloaded for the feed? More files will only get downloaded if the auto-downloaded setting is higher than the number of media files already downloaded.

Auto-download / auto-delete

OK, let me start off by saying that the effect I'd like is to keep the most recent "N" media files, with the oldest being automatically deleted to make room as a new one arrives. I'm not sure if I can get that effect with the options at my disposal, but suggestions on how to come as close as possible would be great.

Note that the text around the "Auto Delete Policy" preference (in the per-feed settings) refers to a "Delete Oldest" policy. However, the drop-down control doesn't include a policy with that name. (And BTW the text for the same preference in the global feed options context doesn't include this reference because apparently the text is clipped. It ends mid-sentence: "...will never be auto-deleted unless the policy".)

Thanks for your help.

I just fixed the first

I just fixed the first problem (text not matching policy name). The second one is because that screen is using a standard android preferences screen which doesn't have the same flexibility with the amount of text to show. I'm not sure if I can fix that but I'll give it a shot.

Thanks for pointing that out.

Option meaning

I just updated to the latest version and I see the control now has the option "Keep the most recent X, where X is the value ...", which I'm guessing is what I want, thanks! Am I correct in guessing that the "..." means "the value of the 'Auto downloads' setting"?

Ah, I see now that elision

Ah, I see now that elision (the "...") happens only when I have the phone in portrait mode. In landscape mode it shows the full text. An Android quirk, I guess.
