Sync positions in audio/video podcasts to cloud so can sync multiple devices

Eric,

I know this is probably last on your list and a pain to implement but I think it would make your app stand out even more among others. I recently got a Xoom and your app works great on it, although obviously the UI is still for a phone not a tablet. One thing though is that when I play audio/video on that or my phone I really wish when I fired up DoggCatcher on one device it would load up my positions on podcasts from the other device(s).

One idea I had was to use Dropbox for this. 1Password has an Android client that uses Dropbox for sync which is ingenious. It costs you no money since you have nothing to host and all you have to do is use Dropbox API to store/read files from a user's dropbox. Could be a small file that just lists positions either when you pause the playback or have the user manually sync or at intervals.

Again, know this is kind of out there but I really think as more and more people start having multiple devices, this will be a killer feature for DoggCatcher.

Also side note - are you planning in making any updates to DoggCatcher to make it fore UI friendly for Tablets (fragments or whatever)?

Thanks

Not last

It's not last. I was just checking out gpodder the other night and saw that it does some form of synching across devices including item state. Most of the hard stuff is done by them. I'd just have to hook dc up to their service. There are some other benefits there to including using a pc based podcatcher that is synch'd.

I do have some plans for the tablet. The tablet emulator is incredibly slow, I was thinking of picking up a xoom once the wifi only ones come out. The fragments api will let us show both the feeds screen and the items for a feed on the same screen...much better way to navigate I think.

Thanks for the feedback.

Thanks for the update. Look forward to both of these when they come. By the way the Xoom is freaking awesome. Its early now but the potential is mouth watering, sort of the Nexus One of tablets.

It might also be nice to actually make it into a true cloud service. You'd have the ability to manage your feeds on a website, as well as stream them directly. Sync location and state across all devices, good stuff.

Or does gPodder do exactly that?

Multiple Device Sync

Hi Eric,
Fantastic app, use it all the time. Not sure if i am reviving a redundant thread here in that the updated app already has this capability.... If it does could you point me in the direction of enabling it?
Otherwise is there scope to have it bundled in the future?
Also, is there a way to search for a particular podcast within a feed, ie search for a name within the podcast episode name or some such?
Regardless, love the App,
Cheers

Cloud syncing is on the list

Cloud syncing is on the list but I haven't done any work on this lately.

That's a good idea about searching for a podcast, I added that to the todo list - http://mantis.snoggdoggler.com/view.php?id=1262

Thanks for the feedback.

+1 on Cloud synching. I think my next car will have built in internet and apps in the stereo. Would like to be listening to a podcast there. Get out of my car. Go cut the grass, and pick up listening to the same podcast on my android phone right from where I left off in the car.

I'm a religious user of Doggcatcher and I would like to be able to sync podcast play position across devices as I tend to use different devices depending on the situation. I have a Samsung Galaxy Tab that sits on the bedside table, it would be great to use that to continue a podcast from where I got to on the phone!

Pocket Casts implements a verison of this, allowing you to share position via email etc. I much prefer Doggcatcher's interface so didn't carry on using Pocket Casts.

Maybe syncing position in podcasts to Dropbox may be an idea?

+1 for cloud sync

But in the interim, is there any way to "safely" sync 2 copies of DC on different devices? Is the important data even stored on the SD card?

So a few options I am thinking about:

  • Brute force sync the folders using Folder Sync to DropBox or an SMB share (and kill the app during the process to avoid corrupted files?)
  • Make one device a slave, and set up virtual feeds
  • Can/does DC drop a file somewhere in /sdcard that be sync'd that stores all the important information, and is there an automated way (i.e. Tasker) that can tell DC to use the new file?
  • Something I haven't thought of yet?

You might be able to use

You might be able to use dropbox to sync the entire DoggCatcher directory on both devices. Then on one device, you could do a backup. That would get synched to the other device, on which you would do a restore. That would get you the episode state and the media files.

A mistake here could put you back to a spot where you've lost your feeds and config, so do this at your own risk :-)

It seems like it might work though if you can point dropbox to the DC folder. The only thing I can think of that would mess this up is if you had configured the storage directory preference on either device. That might make this more complicated and I don't know if it would work.

Really need sync across multiple devices

I listen to podcast on the car using my phone and would love to continue it on my tablet after I get home .. Not being able to sync device is my only major flaw for this otherwise awesome app.. Any chance of this getting added in the near future ? Thanks for the great work.

Would pay extra for this

I have been using DoggCatcher since it came out and love where it has gone. This feature would put it over the top. Like the others above I listen to and watch podcasts on multiple devices and need to remember my position in each. Also having it mark them as watched across devices would be huge!

I bought this app a long time ago and would gladly pay for a separate plugin to achieve it.

Just to add my three cents. I have an android phone, nexus 7, and I would be willing to pay an annual fee for a service that would enable a web app (where I could listen to my podcasts when at my computer) and syncing across multiple android devices for media position and listen/status. Love DC, and I agree that this would put the app lightyears ahead of anything else out there.

I don't know if commenting

I don't know if commenting here is helpful or not, but I actually came across the forum searching for ways to accomplish exactly this. Since Android is everywhere now, there this would definitely be useful. Would love to sync phone, tablet, and TV.

Oh, and a special GoogleTV interface would be great. (Though, I understand the userbase for this is very small and not likely a high priority.)

+1. I just installed Doggcatcher on my Nexus 7 and Galaxy Nexus. It was hard enough to export and import a backup from one device to another without having external storage. Cloud syncing of listen status and feed lists would be tremendous!

Only thing I've been doing is

Only thing I've been doing is using my Nexus 7 for video podcasts and Galaxy SIII for audio podcasts. Until this functionality is implemented, it's too hard to keep things in sync so I just manually separate the type of content I use each device for.

Even if DC dropped a plain text file with episodes, current spot (where you paused it last), etc. on Dropbox every time you came out of the app and then inversely every time you launched the app it would attempt to read that file. Wouldn't that suffice? I'm assuming you really just need a way to identify the podcast/episode and a marker for where to resume. Seems pretty lightweight and could be done with XML?

Hoping this is something we see soon!

I think I'm about half way

I think I'm about half way there. I've got the feed list syncing across devices, I'm about to start working on the episodes for each feed. Once I get a basic version working I'll open it up to the current beta testers. I'll also bring into the beta group any other users that want to test it.

-- Disclaimer - This is going to be an experimental feature which may never see the light of day (public release) if I can't get it working reliably but things are looking good so far.

Integration

Just wondering, since you stated gPodder in the beginning of this thread, if your current beta implementation is compatible to gPodder syncing (or any other desktop client that is). I currently always hook up my phone to my desktop by TRS line-in and play podcasts using DoggCatcher on the phone just to have a consistent state. And it's a pain, really. Sync with a desktop client would really help here.

PS: Thank you for bringing this feature in any case.

Cross device sync

Hi Eric.

I have tried most of the podcast apps available and only use DoggCatcher. I have a HTC Incredible running CM7.2 and a new Google Nexus 7 tablet. I'd be interested in helping with the beta test if you still need testers.

The syncing feature would make DoggCatcher stand above the rest.

Thanks for making, and maintaining, such an awesome app.

A temporary solution

Hi everybody,

I'm able to sync my two android devices by using Dropsync(and dropbox)on the "DoggCatcher/export/" folder.

It's not the best solution, everytime you want to sync you have to do "backup" on one device, and then do "restore" on the other.

But it works :).

I've had an android phone for

I've had an android phone for a hear - first S2, now S3. I chose dogcatcher as my podcast player and love it -- use it at home, in gym , travelling etc for both audio and video podcasts

But just last week I got an android tablet (galaxy note 10.1). I now have a dilemma. If I have my tablet with me it's much better to watch video podcasts on there. But if I'm at the gym I'll watch on the phone.

So I really need synchronization which covers
- subscribed podcasts
- which episodes have been listened too

Position is less important as I tend to listen to podcasts in one go. I just want to be able to pick up whichever device I have and work through my list of content.

I do use dropbox, google drive so if either of those can be used for sync, that's fine.

I'm now looking around for any other podcast players even if more limited, just for this one feature as it suddenly becomes so important.

Thanks

Found a way to do it!

This app will sync multiple Android devices. It syncs the data directory, which I believe should give exactly what we need. DataSync Beta
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.quintstoffers.DataSync...

If you pay for the the premium features you get automatic syncing whenever the app opens and closes.

It can sync to Box, FTP, Dropbox, maybe others. I tried it using Box and it worked quickly. Now I can sync DoggCatcher on my phone, tablet, and Google TV. :)

That's pretty cool, I can see

That's pretty cool, I can see how that might work if you stopped DC, synched, then started DC. Bad things might happen if a synch happens to the database while DC is running since what's in DC memory won't jive with the database.

I'm curious to hear how this goes though, so please report back once you've been using for a bit.

Thanks for posting.

I was curious about that as

I was curious about that as well. The program is smart enough to not download if current data is newer than uploaded data. In the event uploaded data is newer than than current data it immediately downloads then gives a toast saying the program will need to be restarted, and then it does so. It successfully closed DC but the restart caused a force close. I immediately reran DC and it had updated successfully, this includes position in the mp3. The only other issue I ran into with this part is my phone had not yet downloaded the podcast, so when I hit play it started streaming, though it maintained its position still. I was pretty impressed by that. (Presto doesn't seem to work on streaming btw)

The other issue is that every time the app is foregrounded it syncs, so for apps that have a lot of data it will get a little bandwidth and possibly battery intensive.

Given that I use DC primarily on my phone and only minimally on my tablet and almost never on my GTV, I don't see it being a big issue for the sync to require a restart of DC.

It is quick at what it does, and aside from the force close it works perfectly. I think this will replace my need to back up settings and such when I change out roms or phones now also. And, it will mean I never have to repeat levels on Angry Birds again! :)

Would love a automagic sync :)

Syncing.. love it when/if it comes even if it's buggy and has to be enabled in a way you are sure you can mess the feeds up totally ;)

Ohh, have been missing this feature so much so i decided to try googling and found this forum. Was hoping that it was beeing worked on. Using the app around 40hours/week split between approx 30h phone (Sensation) And 10h on a Nexus7.

I am really interested in this feature.
My new GS3 is a great device, but the bluetooth is killing me (bluetooth headphones)

My old Captivate, I have Jellybean on it, and if I can listen to podcasts at work, and then get home, plug in my phone for charging, and then attach my bluetooth headset to the captivate that still works perfectly. Turn it on, and get the sync, then pick up exactly where I left of on my main phone.

Is this what is being worked on?

I am now using this captivate in this manner for audio books from Audible.com.
(when I get home, I has to perform tasks like, cook/trash, you name it, and it would be nice to be able to use Doggcatcher and have it immediately sync all the podcasts I listened to during the work day.

I am so into this feature!
