Creating the feed doesn't load most recent items

I have added the feed with the following settings - 10 Episodes to Display, 2 Max Episodes to download, "Delete those as flagged done" as auto delete policy. When the feed is added, two oldest of the 10 displayed episodes are queued for download, not the two most recent, as would be expected and natural.

This is reproducable for any feed with more than 10 items available, NPR's "Plant Money" for example.

Thanks,
Max

Marking as old

What it's doing is trying to get the oldest episodes that are new. Since you just created the feed, they are all new. This may seem odd when you first create a feed, but if you like to listen to items in order of time, then this is what you want.

If you were to mark the two oldest as done, they would be deleted and the two items just after those would download.

It sounds like what you want to do is mark all the items done, then mark the two newest as new. The two newest will be downloaded and once you listen to them and new items are available, new items will be downloaded.

It's just a matter of priming the pump with old items.

If this is too strange for everyone, I could probably do some special handling when a feed is created, like flagging them all old except for the most recent x, where x is the number configured for 'max episodes to download'.

I noticed this too. iTunes

I noticed this too.

iTunes has as a default the way you proposed at the end where all are flagged as old and just the newest episode is downloaded when you add a new podcast. You can click the older ones to download those too if you want. It threw me at first that it wasn't working the way I was familiar with from iTunes.

Re: Creating the feed doesn't load most recent items

I think what throws people off (including myself) is that the display and download order of the 10 (or whatever) most recent episode are different.

While what application is trying to do (i.e. chronological download) sounds logical, "logical" is not always intuitive. ITunes also set up certain habits and expectations which needs to be taken into account.

Your idea of marking newly created feed's items as "done" except the first downloaded X sounds exactly right.

Thanks,
Max

sort order

I'm not too familiar with ITunes but I would think that with an app with a small amount of UI real estate, you would want the recent items on top so you don't have to scroll to get to what you will most likely be looking for.

This may also be a personal preference thing...I sort my email with the newest on top, but I know most people have the newest at the bottom.

I'll add a future feature to mark all but the most recent x as done.

It's in progress, you'll see it in the next release or two.

does this still work like this?

Seems so; just curious if there's an option I missed. I was pretty confused until I read this thread and now I have things looking good.

Take a look at the post - "Marking as old"

It's in this thread...and that's the way it should be working. When you create a new feed, all the items should be done except for the most recent which should be 'new'.

If that's not what you're seeing, let me know, it would be a bug.

itunes

I kind of miss how itunes worked. Any chance DG could work this way? When new podcasts show up, I'ed just like them to be downloaded, and old ones should get removed, even if I have not listened to them. Would work best for news\current awareness casts, IMHO.

One option

One thing you could do is set the Auto Download and Number of Items to the same number...something small like 5. This way you would always have the most recent 5 downloaded. You could use a larger number if you had the space, but the key is to have the same value for Auto Download and Number of Items, so you'll always have the most recent one downloaded.

Would that work?

Yes

It did work. Thanks.
