default start screen, podcast management

I think the UI needs a overhaul. whenever DC is opened, it defaults to the feed page. why does it do this? I never need to use the feed page. you use the feed page once in a blue moon to add podcasts then the other 99% of the time you use audio or video. it should default to your queue... in the case of DC that would either be the audio or video page.

within the audio page, the options at the top are difficult to press (i.e. small) and should just be moved to settings. "playmode" should be an option that when you play a podcast, playmode is on or off. playlist could be renamed to "sort" because that's what it is. playlist sounds more like a queue. Autoplay should be in settings.

podcast management.
this shouldn't be news but it's quite difficult to add podcasts. you have all these search options to find it and when you do find it, you don't necessarily find a podcast feed. multiple feeds with similar sounding names all appear. I'm not sure how other programs do it but for example, i think itunes and doubletwist just list the one podcast you are looking for or a similar one. but their results are more accurate. I understand that that's probably the reason why you can search under so many directories but other programs don't need this. John Hodgeman has a new podcast out and when i search for it under "search feeds" it can't find it. then at the top there are 3 additional tabs: doggcatcher, digital podcast, and google. this is confusing. there should be 2 buttons, search for feed and enter url.

I'd be glad to give additional feed back if you like. I probably am coming off overly critical but I think DC is the best podcast app in the android market.

I guess there are many ways

I guess there are many ways you can use this app. Personally, I use the Feeds page *all* the time, and I *never* press the fiddly little buttons at the top. I'd rather hide them altogether to be honest.

Having said that, I don't queue up podcasts; I just select them manually when I want to listen to each episode. I don't drive though. I'd imagine if I listened to podcasts while driving, my usage of the program might be very different...

funny you should say that.

funny you should say that. "driving" is one of my scenarios... which is why the queue feature is important to me. I also have a lot of feeds, it's so much quicker to find what i'm looking for in the audio queue.

Good feedback

Screen when opening - You can configure a screen that gets started when you plug in a headset...which I'm guessing you are not doing. I do have an open issue to have the app return to the screen that you last used. It seems like this would suit your purposes. http://mantis.snoggdoggler.com/view.php?id=453

Playlist name - I agree that it's not properly named at the moment. The playlist is going to evolve to do more than sorting down the road, so once the functionality catches up with the name, I think it'll be ok.

Auto-play - Yes, it does need to be in the preferences. I created an issue for this - http://mantis.snoggdoggler.com/view.php?id=722

Adding feeds - I started out with the digital podcast and google search early on and then added the doggcatcher search. There are close to 20k feeds in the doggcatcher search so it may be time to get rid of the other searches. The results are ranked by number of subscribers, so I've always found the ones at the top of the results to be the one I was looking for. There is a lot of "noise" at the bottom of the list...maybe those should be filtered away or an indication of the search confidence would help. Regarding the hodgeman podcast, you can add any feed by the rss url. Once some users subcribe to it, it'll arrive in the search results.

Thanks for the feedback.

Well the reason why I don't

Well the reason why I don't want to bind the headset is that DC isn't the only audio player i use.

Feed sources

Please don't eliminate Google search -- I've found things there that aren't in the other sources.

What I think might be helpful is to merge all feed sources (and remove duplicates), then allow sorting by relevance, popularity, age, etc.

regarding the Hodgeman

regarding the Hodgeman podcast. I ended up adding it by url but this is what happens when you search for it.

doggcatcher tab: 0 matches
digitalpodcast: 0 matches
google: 10 matches

the first match is some short news feed. seems somewhat related but it's not the podcast.
the 2nd and 3rd are boing boing and reddit articles discussing the podcast.
the 4th is actually the right result. the ones below mostly mention John Hodgeman but aren't correct either.

eric, any thoughts to any of

eric,

any thoughts to any of this in the last few months?

I really think the UI could use some improvements. The latest thing I thought of is to redo the entire top navigation bar (where it says audio, feeds, etc). replace that with a static nav bar that lists:

- audio
- video
- feeds
- download queue

in settings i'd like to be able to set one of those tabs as the home screen.

another thing that baffles me is the Engadget Mobile podcast. on doggcatcher, their seems to be a text only feed that precedes the actual podcast. it just says that the podcast is coming out soon or something like that. I'm guessing if i were to subscribe via itunes, it would only grab the audio/video feeds.

Home screen

I have plans to add the ability to change the 'home' screen, that's not too far off. I don't think I'm going to be able to change the first three buttons (audio/video/news) and the default screen that gets loaded when you start the app. Changing the 'home' screen should let you jump to whichever screen you wanted to when the app starts.

It's an interesting idea to have a customizable button as the 4th button. So you could configure what that button does...filter, dl queue, add feed, etc.

I not sure I get exactly what you're saying but I've seen others (androidguys) that have an item that is text (with no media) and then they later attach the media to the item. So it can be difficult to not accidentally flag the item as done before the media gets attached.
