Auto-Delete and Retain Expired

I never want undeleted items deleted. Period. Once I've listened to it then it can go away.

So... I think I got this right. I globally set auto-delete poliy to "All Done Items". Then I went into each feed and set them to Retain Expired items.

Now that said I've been looking around and I'm confused. I THINK from the comment above the option that I will only have to manually delete an episode IF it has fallen off the rss feed but as long as the item is in the feed still it will autodelete. Did I get that right? If so can I add a vote (or whatever) for the auto-delete done items to do so regardless of other "status")

Retain expired

When you say that you don't want items deleted, do you mean the media files or the items?

The retain expired is useful for keeping the item, but you're going to have to manually delete them individually, which is a pain.

If you want the media files to get deleted when you're done listening just set the auto-delete policy to 'delete done items'. The items will go away when they roll off the old end.

The 'delete done items' is confusing...really it means delete the media for done items. I'll see what I can do to clear that up.

For Example...

It looks like the Car Talk podcast only has two items in their feed at any point in time but especially for me where I'm trying to catch up on other stuff I might have 4 or 5 episodes of Car Talk that I haven't listened to.

My guess/understanding is that the Retain Expired option will allow me to have those 4 or 5 episodes stay available on my device until I get around to listening to them even though only the latest 2 are in the feed. This is good and what I want.

What I'm confused about is when, if ever, those items would get deleted. If I use the Auto Delete Done Items setting will they go away on their own whenever that Auto Delete Done Items process happens? If I read the on screen help correctly it implies to me that the Auto Delete would only happen for items still in the feed at the time they are done. (But maybe it means once I check Retain Expired that I'm on my own for deletes)

What I would like is that the auto delete would remove an item when it was done regardless of whether its still in the feed or not.

Expired

You right about the retain expired keeping your 4/5 episodes.

I haven't used it in a while, but I'm pretty sure the way the retain expired works is that the media is not deleted ever, even if you have an auto-delete policy. So when you use retain expired, nothing will get deleted for you...you'll need to manually do the deletions.
