Global Max Episodes, Max Enclosures, Auto Delete preferences

Currently the Max Episodes to Display, Max Enclosures to Download and Auto Delete Policy are set on a podcast-by-podcast basis. In my case (60+ podcasts) it's a real chore to set them all to "Delete old". Perhaps a global default setting, which could then be modified on a per-podcast basis?

Metoo. I have not used the

Metoo. I have not used the auto-delete system. When exactly does it delete? Obviously it doesn't delete the episode as soon as you've started playing it (and auto flags old), but does it delete if you pause it and close the app? Does it delete if you pause it but click another episode or podcast to listen to, even though you're not finished?

This uncertainty outlined above discouraged me from implementing this feature at all. This could be resolved by instead having a "Delete All Old Episodes" button in preferences, which will delete anything that's been automatically or manually flagged old, while providing convenience as requested here.

Perhaps a three-state flag

At some point in iTunes' history (not sure exactly which version) they implemented a three-state flag instead of a two-state flag. You have Unplayed (which is a podcast which has been downloaded but never been played or has been marked as unplayed -- similar to New), Not new (which has been played but not to the end -- similar to Old), and Played (which has been played to the end or manually marked as Played). In this case I believe the most useful option would be a Delete Played instead of a Delete Old, or perhaps Old could be the same as Played and Not New could be the new third state. I've found this is adequate most of the time so I have it set by default to delete al Played episodes when it syncs, and have overridden this for podcasts where I might want to listen to old episodes. Another thing which would conceivably serve almost the same purpose is the "Delete when played" option you have in Future Features, as long as it deletes when finished playing (and not in the middle if you, i.e., pause, exit and later want to resume)

Auto-delete

These are all good comments/ideas.

The current logic is based around deleting when you are just about to download. This really should be in the user manual but isn't yet. What happens is this... Let's say our max to download is 5 and we have 5 already downloaded. Then we do an update and determine there are two new episodes to download because they are new. We try to clear two open slots by deleting the two oldest episodes that are also marked as old. We won't delete any new episodes or the one that is playing. This keeps a 'sliding window' of 5 episodes downloaded at all times and will require no user intervention to delete, other than playing episodes. Where this logic is weak is in the area of storage, since there can be episodes on SD that we don't need anymore.

As you say, adding the "delete on completion" may mitigate the weakness. Maybe a delete button in the set of media player buttons would help too, for those times when you get half way through a podcast and know you're done with it. These would be ways of keeping the number of downloaded episodes at the absolute minimum, while the existing logic would prevent the number of downloads from getting above "max downloads".

I also like the idea of knowing when an episode has completed playing. This could help with deletion and also with creating playlist for episodes that haven't been played.

Thanks for contributing your thoughts, you've obviously touched on some things I haven't thought of.

Also Max Episodes to Download!

Now that I see how the Max Enclosures to Download flag works... a global preference is SORELY NEEDED!
