Sync to Google Reader or some other way to manage feeds
It would be helpful if it was possible to manage/add/delete feeds via Google Reader or some other website...maybe even the snoggdoggler website. It can be a little time consuming to add a podcast via the app. It would be quicker to make changes on a computer, especially were one can cut and paste an rss feed from one website into another, rather than trying to type it into the phone.
Thanks for the great app!
Sorry for my tone, but it would be helpful if you searched before posting ;)
This feature has been requested multiple times, there's an issue filed for that and it will be coming in future releases.
Peace! ;)
For a while, I wasn't sure exactly how I wanted to handle this but after watching the recent google io presentations, there was a demonstration of a sort of push notification from a browser (and also through a server I assume) directly to an android device. That seems to be the perfect solution for this problem, so I'm waiting to find out some more details on how this would work. At the moment, all we have is the demo. If anyone knows anything about it, please share.
I would love to see some integration with Google Reader... but I would like to see more than just for importing feeds.
I've been using Dog Catcher since I received my Nexus One, and generally it works well. But I am now experimenting with Listen because of the integration with Google Reader. What I would love is to be able to listen to feeds on either my phone or my computer. I.e., if I'm sitting in my office, I would like to be able to listen to a feed through my computer, and then if I listen to it there, the phone knows that I've already listened to it (i.e. if that post has been marked as Read in Google Reader, than it is marked as listened/complete within DoggCatcher).
Thanks!
Curt
I'm not sure that google reader has the ability to store the current position of an item, but it's probably something that I could do on my end though.
I would be delighted if this feature was added . . . it's possible to export a Google reader tag as an opml file, as I've done here: http://www.google.com/reader/public/subscriptions/user/16234220457285120...
If Doggcatcher could accept a URL and monitor it say, nightly or weekly for new feeds (without having to download to the SD card etc) it would be a great way to manage feeds online.
To be clear, I personally am not interested in keeping track of read/unread items in Reader - I'd be more than happy for it just to be a way to update Doggcatcher's list of feeds.
This existing issue sounds like the first step to what you are asking for, I moved it to soon.
If you could get it to that stage, I'd be a very happy bunny :)
It's the one thing stopping me from using DoggCatcher as my podcatcher . . .
I checked out the app today and the interface is really nice. I was able to get my listener feeds into the app but it was a pain exporting the feed and uploading it somewhere i could stream it in.
I would easily purchase this app if it could import feeds from google reader.
When I first got my Incredible, I used Listen for podcasts, and the really poor integration with Reader was one of the reasons I stopped using it and switched to DC. Whenever I listened to a podcast in Listen, it would still be unread in Reader, so periodically I'd have to manually mark all the items I'd already listened to as read. In addition, there were feeds with items that would appear in the Reader feed but not in the Listen feed, so I'd have to listen to the podcast in Reader.
DoggCatcher, because it's completely standalone, doesn't have any of those problems.
Of course, that's just my $0.02. I just hope that if integration with Reader is added, it's optional.
When it's added, it will certainly be optional...more of a synch that relying on reader to store feeds.
Initially it will probably just be a one way import to get DC loaded up with whatever you have in reader. Then the synching with items will follow.
I don't see google reader sync for podcast subscriptions in the past or future plans? I've used a couple others that do have this, but have many other problems with them, so I would really like to try DC.
There are 2 major reasons I want this:
1. When I come across a podcast while working on my desktop machine, I just want to subscribe from there and add it to google reader and have it show up on my phone.
2. Keeping track of viewed podcasts between multiple devices. Phone, tablet, pc, ...
Thanks,
Jim
Jim I would agree it would be nice to have an option to add a podcast via the computer, and have it auto sync to our Android Device.
I also agree with the viewed/listened to(or even partially listened to) podcast on multiple devices would be nice. Say I listen to 17 minutes of PodcastA on my DroidX2 and want to resume where I left off on another Droid Device, that would be a great feature! For this to be seamless, this would require some sort of online storage of each users' podcasts and listen status, but it would be a fairly small database.
It is in the plan but it's not scheduled for anytime soon. I can see the reasons for doing this, it's difficult to keep synched between different devices/pc's.
Thanks Eric. There is one app that does this really well called "Play, Look, Listen", it even stores the current position you are at back in google reader... But it has bugs in other areas which makes it very difficult to use.
This is the number one thing I would like to see in DoggCatcher - the ability to maintain a list of feeds online.
+1 Would like to see online feed maintenance integration such as through greader along with organization features such as greader tags/categories.
FeedR has a great implementation of this.
Just thought I'd add my voice to this request! Managing Dogg on both my phone and asus transformer is driving me batty (not to mention having to plug one of these in instead of also being able to listen on my puter...)
That said, I appreciate there is a roadmap
thanks for your work!
I hear ya, this is getting to be a hot thread. I'll probably have to move this up some.
Thanks for posting.
Its a shame I have to listen to my podcasts with my phone speaker while sitting at a computer.....
I'd also like to request this feature too.
The UI of Doggcatcher is far superior to Listen (though I would like an option of bigger buttons), and the one single advantage that Listen has at the moment is the sync feature. I like to listen to podcasts either on PC or phone, and I certainly prefer to manage my podcasts on the PC, so it would be awesome for doggcatcher to automatically sync new podcasts added and mark in Google Reader which podcasts have been listened to.
This is the only reason I'm still using Listen.
Any update on this one?
I don't have anything firm on this but it has been requested pretty frequently, especially since more people are ending up with multiple devices.
