Hi
I've almost always got something in the download queue so I've almost always got the "DoggCatcher is busy - Episodes in download queue" notification in my notification-list. I'd like to have an option to disable this useless (to me) notification which is wasting space.
Regards
Hans
Well, maybe. When there is something in the queue, DC tells android not to kill DC. This is so we can get the downloads started as soon as the 'only on wifi/etc' conditions become true. Android requires that we show a notification while we don't want to be killed.
So it's possible to not show the notification, but that also means that android could kill DC at any point (that it's not in the foreground). Would that be a problem?
Hi,
I don't know if there is a way to do this, so I am posting this here. For me as well, the notification is somewhat of a nuisance. It will stay quite a while since I have downloads limited to "On Power". While this is a great feature, I wonder if it would be possible to trigger the feed update only when plugged in. This way it wouldn't have to do a regular check and then wait for me to plug it in but instead always do both at once. Not sure if this is possible, but for me, at least, it would solve the problem.
Thanks,
d
That might work. We could also let DC get killed and just rely on the next scheduled update to re-add the episodes to the queue. If the device is plugged in at that time, then they'll get downloaded.
My only worry with the second option is that a too vigilant system would never guarantee anything downloaded and keep me guessing. One thing I like about the constant reminder, now, is that it ensures the download actually takes place predictably.
I wasn't aware that Android only guarantees stay-alive if there's a notification showing. I've got DC configured to only allow downloads when on wifi. I don't need DC to stay alive when it's on 3G, so I'd be fine with it closing then, provided that it restarts when I get back on wifi. If Android doesn't guarantee that the app is restarted when wifi comes back on then I'd end up missing downloads, which would make me feel sad :(. In other words, I'd much rather have the busy notification on than miss out on downloads when on wifi.
Thanks a lot for your attention.

This Notification is ALWAYS showing on my screen! And I can't dismiss it!!! Please, please let us have an option to turn it off!
And regarding the notification being required for the app to be unkillable, from what I can see Facebook, Twitter and many other apps seem to keep running in the background without any notification. I always see them in my task manager lists and if I kill those task processes they just come right back! (Annoyingly)
It would seem there is another way to get an app to stay 'alive' enough to monitor changes on the device without requiring this perpetual Notification. Could Doggcatcher perhaps use some of these methods?
Please also consider that a Perpetual Notification breaks the whole point of the 'notification' function! Its telling the user something that is a constant rather than an occasional instance. For me I KNOW that I have episodes in the download queue. I put them there! I want them there! I expect them to be there! I would be bothered if they weren't there! If Doggcatcher is working as I set it up there is likely to always be episodes in the download queue until the day my device breaks down.
This constant notification is a little like having your car constantly beeping or chiming or blinking at you to tell you that you actually have gas in your gas tank! That 'helpful' feature will quickly make driving that car a painful experience. How much better to only have it tell you when you are close to running out of gas instead! That might be useful.
You can disable notifications in the 'User Interface' & if your device is running 5.0 Lollipop, disable the 'Lockscreen Control' notification in the 'Headset/Lockscreen ' settings (In the DC Menu)
I just tried that and it still always displays the dogcatcher is busy notification.
There isn't anything in DC that will prevent the notifications for updating feeds, downloading episodes, and playing audio because they are special notifications that keep android from killing the app while those are in progress.
In lollipop (somewhere in the setting for each app), there's an option to hide ALL Notifications for an app. I've tried this and it works.

Go to Settings | Application Manager | DoggCatcher, then uncheck the box "Show notifications". This will disable ALL notifications from the app, but it is the only way I've been able to suppress the constant "DoggCatcher is busy" notification since my LG G3 was updated to Lollipop. I'd love for DoggCatcher to figure this out, as it seems that others are having the same issue. I didn't have the problem before the Lollipop update.
