Consistency between DG screens

I wanted to post this for long time and eventually got to seat and write it down.

This request is to make the the Audio screen (where all the tracks are listed) and the Feed screen (where the tracks of a single feed are listed) more consistent. Basically they list the same content except that the second shows only the tracks of a single feed.

* Time sorting: first screen lists oldest first, second screen lists newest first (my preference, newest first).

* Download queue: both screens has Update command but only the first has Download Queue (my preference, have Download Queue in both, after issuing an Update I typically go to the download queue to see the progress).

* Menu item location: for example, both screen have Media Button menu entry but at different location. (My preference, have identical or similar menue entries in the same location).

* More commands: some of the More commands that are relevant for the second screen appear only in the first screen, for example (Sleep Timer and Cancel Feed Update). (My preference, have them in both screens).

* Auto Play On/OFF: applicable for both screens, available only on the first screen.

DoogCatcher is a great app and I use it for 2-3 hours daily (audio only).

Thanks,

Kam

Thanks for the detailed feedback, let me hit them one by one.

Sorting - I agree it's inconsistent and confusing. We've had a few discussions about this and I'm still not thinking I can change it (at least by default). I think the audio playlist needs to have the items listed in the order that they will play going top down because what we're mostly interested in is what will play next. If this list displays newest first, you'll have to scroll to the bottom so see what will play next. On the feeds screen, most people are interested in what has been published recently and those are at the top. This is a tough one and I think I might end up adding a preference to let you flip the order of one or the other.

Queue - agreed, create issue - http://mantis.snoggdoggler.com/view.php?id=866

Menu items - yep - http://mantis.snoggdoggler.com/view.php?id=867

More commands - yep, same issue as above

Auto-play - I've just added a display and toggle for this on the media player that you see on all screens...it's just to the right of the seekbar. I didn't like it buried in the audio screen because some people didn't know it was there or what it did. Having it in the media player is a little crowded but makes it easy to find and press on to see what it does.

Thanks for the feeback.

Hi Eric, Thanks for

Hi Eric,

Thanks for considering my feedback.

Regarding the listening order, play-newer-first is my preference. This way I can listen to fresher content (assuming I get to listen to about 50% of the tracks I load). Currently I need to manually walk my way backward in the play list.

If you want a really smart order, you can have an exception for for parts of the same session (some broadcaster break a single program into one hour chunks). In this case use for example an order such as

Primary order: descending date.
Secondary order: ascending time of day.

or do some smart grouping of consecutive pieces.

Anyway, DG is great!

Thanks,

Kam

Menu consistency

I'm not sure if this is occuring just because of my relatively low screen resolution, but the layout of the menus for the feeds list and the episodes list screens are quite different -- one is a 2 x 3 grid, the the other is 3 x 2.

See these screenshots: http://i.imgur.com/TuJfl.png and http://i.imgur.com/kouO0.png.

These should probably use the same layout, though I have no particular preference for which.

While I'm here in this thread, what's with the 'display and toggle for [auto play] on the media player that you see on all screens'? I'm not seeing this. Should I be seeing it? Or... is there some option I should enable. (I'm on version 1.2.2101)

On my phone (EVO, CM 7, Android 2.3.3) the feeds list menu has 2 rows x 3 columns, the all episode screen has 1x3 and the single feeds episode list has 2x3.

Autoplay

The autoplay toggle hasn't been released to beta group yet. I'm holding off until I get the variable speed to the market without any problems, then I'll release a beta with the autoplay toggle and some other stuff.

I think the menus do vary with resolutions, I can get them in the same order on all the screens but there's no guarantee that they'll be in the same layout 2x3 vs 3x2.
