sorting playlist option?

Is there a way to sort the playlist that uses your new autoplay feature? It tends to skip from podcast to podcast in the default. Its weird to go right from a drum and bass podcast right to This american life and then into a happy hardcore track. Maybe make it stay in the same podcast if there are more episodes available?

playlist sort

The playlist is sorted by (InProgress/New) then Podcast then Episode. They should play in the order that they are displayed in the playlist, unless new episodes are being downloaded at the same time. If they are not, please let me know, because that would be a bug.

I think it's doing what you

I think it's doing what you describe. It seems weird to me, though. Maybe it's because I only just got my device and have a bunch to catch up on.

OTA podcast updates on G1 was the last thing that decided me on G1 over iPhone. There are a bunch that I haven't been keeping up with because it's so difficult for me to remember to connect the iPod to the computer and sync it with iTunes. I added Portafilter.net podcast, Coffegeek.com podcast, a couple of sermon podcasts from churches, some music podcasts, etc. They all have a bunch of episodes that I haven't heard yet. In the sort order that you describe above if I decide that I want to listen to some music, I pick that one and start playing it which moves it up to the top of the playlist. I listen to it until it's done and then, because that Podcast is not first on the list of Podcasts, it switches automatically to This American Life (which I left as one of your initial defaults on install).

It seems like it should stay in playing the next episode of the Podcast that you're already in if there are episodes available, and if there are some to be downloaded maybe it would download the next one when you're listening to the last one?

Does that make sense?

I have to say, I'm serious that your app decided me on this phone. I'm a Linux guy and really wanted the google phone, but if I was going to get one of the two between iPhone and G1 I wanted it to make my drive to work (1 hour each way) better. With the ability to automatically update podcasts I can always know I've got something good to listen to on the drive and can stop paying too much for satellite radio. I'll gladly pay for the app when it's officially released.

I understand what you are trying to do

I'm glad to hear it's behaving correctly, even though it doesn't work for all scenarios.

You touch on a few different topics that are interesting.

Now that I hear your story, I think it may make sense to change the sort order to
Podcast/Items{in progress items then new items}/Oldest first. So you, as you say, when you finish an item, the playlist would then play all the inprogress for that channel then the new for that channel, then switch to a new channel. The current behavior plays all the inprogress first (across all channels), then plays new items (across all channels).

In terms of playlists, I would like to get a playlist sort algorithm that meets the needs of most people first, and then start to add a few more to cover the other scenarios.

To users
Any users having an opinion here, please speak up. Once we get default behavior in place it's hard to change later because people get used to it. It's still early enough to change on this though, so let me know what you think.

You also alluded to the notion of categories (tech/church/music). I would like to add categorization to channels for organizational purposes. Categories may also be useful to consider for a future playlist. It would be nice to start an item in a playlist and know that all the items in that category would play before moving on to another category. That would apply to your music example.

The new order sounds better than the current

I think you're right. It makes more sense to go by channel first. A nice option would be to stop the playlist between channels (I.e. when you reach the end of a channel) for those of us who like to manually select which channel to listen to next.

Better now but...

If I navigate down the playlist and start playing an episode, after that one ends the next one played is the one at the top of the list. I think it would be more logical for it to continue down the list instead of restarting at the beginning. Does it make sense?

I'm not sure whether to file it as a bug or a feature request, so...I'll put it in this thread that deals with the playlist :)

Play order

That's a bug. Is this always happening or just sometime's. If there's any pattern that you can discern let me know.

Added to bug list.

Months hosing sort?

I think there's a bug in the sorting related to the month.

I did a fresh start of DC with my aggregated Pipes feed and all was well, playing oldest to newest with the oldest item dates going back to the 23rd of Jan. Next update brought in new items with dates of Feb 19th - Feb 22nd. They ended up at the bottom of the list instead of the top. "Auto" immediately jumped to these newer items at the bottom. Perhaps the sorting is reading the date only and not the month? All my items are definitely in proper order in the RSS...

RE: Months hosing sort

Nevermind. It's not the month. Just did another update and new items are now at the top. Something in the code is pushing updates to the bottom of the list under certain conditions. So now my list is ordered:

items 2/23 - 2/21
items 2/19 - 1/23
items 2/20 - 2/18

This is a bug

I have seen this just a handful of time but I've been unable to nail it down. Once your order gets hosed, there's a trick to get it sorted again (until I figure out the real problem).

Edit the max number of items to be 1 greater than what it is now and save the changes. It will sorts the items. You can then put the max number of items back where it was.

That should work, let me know if it doesn't.

Your new order sounds good

I think your proposal sounds great to sort first by feed, then in progress and oldest first. I agree that it will be tough to get a default that works for everyone.

I'm getting weirdness on another podcast feed which I'll post a different topic on.

Thanks again for the great app. I had a podcast fail to download over the weekend and I liked the notification and the red number that let me see exactly which one was bad. I got a stronger connection and tapped on it and it came right down.

Yes!

I agree with your proposed new sort order... when autoplaying I'd like it to remain within the current podcast, playing all items starting with the one currently in playback and then from oldest to newest, before moving on to another podcast. If possible, when within a podcast items have the same creation time, alphanumeric order would then be applied.

Thanks!
