Unexpected playback

If I connect my phone to my Audi MMI via Android Auto, some strange things happen. Even if I was listening to the radio in the car and Doggcatcher was stopped and I unplug the phone, Doggcatcher starts playing. Usually I can hear it, so I pause playback and then go in the office to work. Sometimes, however, the next time the phone needs to make a sound (e.g. incoming text message), that will cause Doggcatcher to start playing again. That could be 30 minutes later in a meeting and really embarrassing!

My phone is a Pixel XL. It happened over multiple Android Auto versions, also with VW multimedia (different car) and with Android 8 and 9. Anyone else have this problem?

If I haven't used Doggcatcher for several days, the phone suspends Doggcatcher for battery reasons and then this problem can go away.

Unexpected playback Wired or Bluetooth

Verify of the pause audio settings are enabled

First headset (DC Navigation Menu>Headset/Lockscreen) Pause Audio
2nd Audio player (DC Navigation Menu>Audio Player>Pause audio on power removal) enable on "AC or USB"

Bluetooth
Delete the pairing from your vehicle/headset BT device and your mobile device, then re-pair again & reboot your device

Replicated

I'm having the same (or at least very similar) problem.

DETAILS:
DoggCatcher Version: 1.2.4154
Device: Motorola Moto x4
Android Build: OPWS28.3.5 (?)
Carrier: Google Fi USA

SUMMARY: Doggcatcher starts playing when phone is disconnected from Android Auto

STEPS TO REPRODUCE:
1. Connect phone to Android Auto in a car.
2. Verify that the media app selection is Doggcatcher, or start playing audio through Doggcatcher.
3. Disconnect the phone from Android Auto in any way (unplug the cable, Android Auto crashes, etc.), OR switch to another audio app in Android Auto (eg. Spotify, Google Play)

WHAT HAPPENS: Audio starts / continues playing. If the car audio system is still on, the phone will remain connected to Bluetooth, so the playback may not be audible if a channel other than Bluetooth is selected (eg. Radio, Sirius, CD, etc.). If the car is turned off, the playback will *sometimes* stop when Bluetooth disconnects a few seconds later.

WHAT SHOULD HAPPEN: Audio should not start if not playing, or should stop if playing.

FREQUENCY: 100%

SEVERITY: Extremely annoying and occasionally embarrassing, particularly if the current podcast is "adult oriented" and I have kids in the car.

NOTES:
1. I can only reproduce this using in-dashboard Android Auto. Running the app on the phone doesn't do it.
2. I have verified the issue on two different cars: a 2017 Hyundai Sonata Plug-in Hybrid, and a Ford Mustang (year unknown).
3. I have been using Doggcatcher for many years, and this is annoying enough that I'm starting to evaluate other podcatchers.
4. This problem is unique (as far as I know) to Doggcatcher. If any other audio app is selected in Android Auto, whether playing or not, this does not occur.
5. Im pretty sure this problem has existed for as long as I've had a car with Android Auto - over a year.
6. I looked at WayneC's suggestions above. I already have the first (pause on headset disconnect), but not the second (pause on power disconnect), and I have deleted the Bluetooth pairing several times. I will see if the second workaround fixes the problem and report back tomorrow, but I want to note that I use several other Bluetooth devices to stream from Doggcatcher, and this problem is unique to cars with Android Auto. I also don't _like_ the second workaround, because I leave my phone plugged in at my desk while working, and want my podcasts to continue playing if I unplug and walk away.

Thanks.

This issue was resolved on

This issue was resolved on version 1.2.4149 http://mantis.doggcatcher.com/view.php?id=2249 - since the USB Type-C port can also be used as headset, please verify if the problem can be reproduce with " Pause Audio" enabled in the app's headset settings - Re: note 6 - if so, send a log right after the problem is reproduced (DC Navigation Menu> More>Report Problem - put "Replicated- Forum" in the subject line and I'll forward this issue to the developer

Good news!

Thanks for the feedback. I've always had "Pause Audio" enabled in the headset settings, so it seems that the answer to that question is yes. I had no idea that USB-C can be used as a headset, but that does explain a bit.

The good news from the subject line is that I set the "pause audio on power removal" option to AC/USB and, holy cow, it's like having a brand new podcast player. Not only does it not start playing when I unplug from the car, but when Android Auto got bogged down and exited (an entirely separate issue that I'm not going to get into here), the car audio seamlessly switched over to Bluetooth! As noted in my previous post, prior to this, the car audio would remain on whatever is was on before (eg. radio), so I wouldn't hear the podcast continue to play. This is perfect.

I think I'll get used to the situation of the audio stopping when I unplug to get up from my desk, because I realized today after having it happen several times, that most of the time I get up from my desk, the first thing I do is turn on my phone and pause the player (because I'm answering the door or similar), so this actually saves me a couple of steps in the usual case.

As for Note 6, would you like me to turn off the "pause audio on power removal" option and try to reproduce the issue so I can send a the debug info, or were you only wanting that if the other steps _didn't_ work?

Glad the issue has been solved...I only needed the log if both recommended settings were enabled & didn't resolve the problem

Same problem

I have the same problem, but unlike the previous person my issue isn't solved by turning on pause playback when power removed.

I was just sitting at my desk and got an alert that I had an email and suddenly doggcatcher started playing.

Same problem

Exact same problem as described previously. I have checked both settings mentioned and they are set to the recommended settings ("Pause Audio" and "AC or USB"). Doesn't happen ALL the time...just often enough to be annoying. Potentially embarrassing as a notification can come in at anytime (during quiet meetings with a client for example). I also have the latest version 1.2.4154.

Running the latest Android version 9, OxygenOS version 9.0.8, OnePlus 5T phone

Similar random-start problem but with my phone alone

I'm having similar random-start problem but with my phone alone. No headset, etc.
DETAILS:
DoggCatcher Version: 1.2.4154
Device: Google Pixel 4XL
Android Build: v11, build RQ3A.210805.001.A1
Carrier: Google Fi USA
SUMMARY: Doggcatcher starts playing when Google Assistant starts Google News Briefs
STEPS TO REPRODUCE:
1. Set native Android Clock alarm.
2. Edit Google Assistant Routine to include “Play The News” and choose at least one news source.

WHAT HAPPENS: DC starts 2-3 times via Google Assistant after my morning alarm goes off. It plays simultaneously with Google News Briefs for about 5 seconds, then DC stops and News Briefs keeps playing.
WHAT SHOULD HAPPEN: Only Google News Briefs should play. not DC.
FREQUENCY: 100%
SEVERITY: I miss the first 5-8 seconds of my Google News briefs.
NOTES:
1. The DC process runs in the background (zero DC services, just one process) when my phone starts.
2. If I force stop DC this issue will not occur.
3. Doesn’t matter if the phone is charging or not.
Thanks

Disable the "Update feeds on

Disable the "Update feeds on start" setting (DC Navigation Menu>Settings>Feed Updates) then exit the app (DC Navigation Menu>More> Exit) this should resolve the problem

I've been having a similar

I've been having a similar issue and none of these troubleshooting steps have worked for me. I've learned to just hit play/pause after getting out of the car. But recently it's been getting worse, instead of just playing it plays at Plaid speed. Not even 2x, like 10x speed. Best case I have to rewind the episode, worst case the episode ends and I have to go back to the feed to find it and then scrub to find where I was again.
