What is the name & URL of the feed with the problem? The problem could be a encoding issue with feed if this problem only effects one feed.

Variable speed video

Variable speed playback only works when using the 'Play as Audio' feature on video media files , Variable speed playback for video is currently unavailable

Your original understanding is correct. 'Play as audio' with variable playback is what I am trying to use.

I was able to playback

I was able to playback Tekzilla and Ted feeds as audio and using the 'Variable Speed' feature without an issue. Try exiting the app (In DC Menu>Exit) and restart the app and playback an episode as audio with 'Variable Speed' enabled to see if that resolves the problem. If not the problem could be a memory/CPU issue, DC has to convert from video MP4 to audio MP3 & at the same time playback at a higher speed - send a log (In the DC Menu>Report Problem) right after the failure to verify.
